Ideally, to enjoy a truly immersive sound experience while watching movies and series or playing video games you need a true home theater system with at least five channels. However, surround speakers have the drawback of requiring that you run cables across the room, which can be a hindrance for those who want a discreet and elegant home theater. Fortunately, some multi-room speakers solve this problem as they can be used as wireless surround speakers!
In most cases, it is only possible to use a pair of multi-room speakers as surround speakers with a soundbar from the same manufacturer. However, Yamaha offers this option with all Yamaha MusicCast A/V receivers manufactured from 2018 onwards! The Japanese manufacturer is currently alone in this niche. Let’s hope that Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer, NAD and Sony soon decide to provide the same feature.
Multi-room speakers are very versatile and can be used as surround speakers. They provide more freedom than wireless surround speakers, which are only designed to be paired with a dedicated soundbar and can’t be used independently to play music. They are therefore limited to wireless home theater systems.
You can use multi-room speakers to wirelessly stream music in any room, then pair them with your compatible A/V receiver or soundbar in the living room for your movie nights.
