How far away should you sit from your TV?

When installing a new TV, the question of the ideal distance between the screen and the sofa often comes up. It depends not only on the space available, but also on precise visual criteria. Knowing how far away to sit allows you to make the most of image definition and guarantees comfortable viewing, without eyestrain. Perceived image size, sharpness and sense of immersion vary greatly with distance. In practice, modern televisions, especially those in Ultra High Definition (4K UHD), mean that you can sit much closer to the screen than a few years ago, without distinguishing pixels. It remains to be seen how far away the image needs to be in order to occupy a suitable place in the field of vision.

Knowing the ideal distance between the TV and the viewer means you can enjoy the best picture.

Viewing distance depends on screen size

The optimum distance for watching television is generally expressed in terms of the screen diagonal. The recommendations of the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) provide two simple guidelines: for traditional use (varied programs, sports), the screen should occupy around 30° of the horizontal field of view. For more cinema-oriented use, you can aim for an angle of 40°, which implies being closer or choosing a larger screen.

In practical terms, this means sitting at a distance of between 1.2 and 1.7 times the screen diagonal, expressed in centimetres. For example, a 55″ TV (approx. 140cm) is best viewed from a distance of between 1.70m and 2.36m, depending on the viewing angle. The larger the screen, the wider the useful viewing distance. This is not an absolute rule, but a good starting point to avoid an image that’s too small or, on the contrary, feels overwhelming.

Viewing distances by screen size

The table below shows recommended distances for different TV sizes, based on 16:9 models in 4K UHD or 1080p HD definition. A 30° angle is suitable for general use, while a 40° angle provides a more immersive experience, similar to that sought after in home theater.

Screen size (diagonal)Distance (30° angle)Distance (40° angle)
43″ (109cm)1.78m1.31m
50″ (127cm)2.07m1.52m
55″ (140cm)2.27m1.67m
65″ (165cm)2.69m1.98m

These distances can be adapted to suit personal preferences. Some users like a more enveloping image, others prefer a little more distance. These are indicative values.

The aim is to find the right balance between screen size and viewing distance. If the available space is limited, it may make sense to opt for a slightly smaller TV. Conversely, if the sofa is more than 3 meters away, a screen of 75″ or more will ensure correct immersion, especially for films. In any case, it’s worth taking a few measurements before deciding.
