Electronics giant Sony recently rolled out a beta update for the firmware on its Sony PS5 console. Available initially for a limited number of countries, this new PS5 update introduces several significant improvements, including Dolby Atmos compatibility, new accessibility tools, and support for SSDs up to 8TB.
PS5 update: Dolby Atmos
The flagship feature of this update is the addition of Dolby Atmos compatibility for all HDMI-compatible devices, such as soundbars, TVs and AV receivers. With the Tempest 3D AudioTech technology integrated into the PS5, gamers already benefit from enhanced immersion, with three-dimensional virtual spatialization. Thanks to Dolby Atmos’ extremely precise spatialization of the game’s sound elements, it’s even easier to locate enemies and gain the upper hand over your opponents.
To activate Dolby Atmos on the PS5, go to the console’s settings. Once the update is complete, select [Dolby Atmos] under [Settings] > [Sound] > [Audio output] > [Audio format (Priority)].
PS5 update: new features
This PS5 beta update also brings functional improvements, with easier access to in-game help during gameplay, as well as a new interface for screen sharing and simplified access to game sessions. Players can now assign a second controller to a specific account, offering a new way to play with friends or help your children get through a difficult section of a game. Finally, an option to activate haptic feedback effects in the console menus has been added, and the update allows you to set the volume of sound signals emitted by the console on power-up, power-down or standby.
PS5 update: up to 8TB storage
As for storage, gamers can now use M.2 SSDs with capacities of up to 8TB, doubling the previous limit of 4TB. This improvement is particularly beneficial for gamers who have a large library of games on their Digital Edition Sony PlayStation 5.

PS5 update: availability
The PS5 beta update is currently limited to a selection of countries, including France, Canada, the USA, Japan, the UK and Germany, but a global version is planned for later this year. To take advantage of it now, you can sign up for Sony’s beta tester program and receive an email invitation to download this PS5 update.
