Fifteen years after its release, the video game Minecraft is still going strong. With its huge worldwide community of gamers, the franchise is of interest to Hollywood. Originally developed by Markus “Notch” Persson, the cult video game is about to be adapted into an animated series on Netflix and a live-action feature film. Minecraftmania isn’t stopping anytime soon!

Minecraft: the indie game that became a global pop culture phenomenon
Created by Swedish developer Markus Persson, known under the pseudonym “Notch”, Minecraft production began in May 2009, with the first alpha version released on May 17 of the same year. Highly inspired by Zachary Barth’s Infiniminer, it was an immediate success, and the gaming community fully embraced the block-based construction game. A year later, Markus founded Mojang Studios to continue Minecraft development.
The title rapidly gained in popularity thanks to its concept, which mixes survival, crafting and construction. Minecraft was officially launched in November 2011. The game’s reputation continued to grow, and Mojang Studios introduced many new features as the months went by, until 2014 when Microsoft bought the company and the rights to Minecraft for $2.5 billion.
Today, Minecraft is one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold worldwide. Its success even surpasses that of Grand Theft Auto V, which “only” sold 200 million copies, ahead of Tetris with its 100 million sales. The game’s world and imagery have become part of popular culture and continue to attract new players.

From video game to film with Jack Black and Jason Momoa
Scheduled for release in 2025, the live-action film based on the Minecraft universe will star Jack Black as Steve, adding to the long list of video game adaptations. Jason Momoa (aka Aquaman), Jennifer Coolidge and Kate McKinnon also star in this project, which we’ve been hearing about since 2014. Warner Bros. Pictures has been putting off production of this film for the past ten years. Rob McElhenney, Shawn Levy and Peter Sollett took turns directing, before finally putting the film on hold during the covid lockdowns. It wasn’t until 2022 that we learned that this feature film would finally be directed by Jared Hess.

Despite its difficult development, the film is still eagerly awaited by the fan community. However, we can expect a pleasant surprise, since in recent years the film industry seems to be taking these adaptations a little more seriously. The Last of Us and Fallout series, for example, have received nothing but praise. What’s most surprising is that for a long time, video games drew a great deal of inspiration from the cinema, and today the trend seems to be reversed. So much so that a growing number of Hollywood actors are turning to video games. The Minecraft movie will be in cinemas from April 2, 2025.
An animated Minecraft series on Netflix
To celebrate its 15th anniversary, the Minecraft franchise is also getting a CGI animated series on Netflix. This production is set to introduce new characters and offer an original story, although little information has been released. This new Netflix series could well give the game a new lease of life, attracting a new generation of gamers while rekindling the interest of long-time fans.

For now, we’ll have to make do with a simple teaser featuring a creeper and images of the Nether. The visual style seems very faithful to the game, but with improved lighting. It would have been difficult to imagine anything else, given the iconic nature of the game’s characters and landscapes. What’s certain is that the Minecraft community is eagerly awaiting this series, which could well be a hit.
Fifteen years on, Minecraft continues to influence pop culture. These ambitious projects show just how enthusiastic fans are about the franchise. Especially since this strategy has paid off for licenses such as Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us, Fallout and many others, whose games have enjoyed a new lease of life after the release of their respective series.
