Sony continues its efforts to bring new features to the PlayStation 5 with the imminent arrival of spatialized sound customization. Intended to optimize the Tempest 3D AudioTech experience with all headphones, this future update will introduce a new menu dedicated to 3D sound. At the same time, the PS5 Slim will benefit from adaptive charging, which should extend the lifespan of accessories.

3D audio calibrated for all headphones
In a video demonstrating the new user interface, Sony presents the new 3D audio calibration system, which will be accessible from the PS5 settings menu. Test sounds are played through the earbuds, and the player must identify the direction of the sound using the three-dimensional graphical interface. In this way, spatialized sound can be adapted to most gamer headphones and personal preferences.
For the moment, the options only allow you to modify the pitch of sound effects. This update will bring greater precision to spatialization with Tempest 3D AudioTech technology. This 3D sound solution joins Dolby Atmos, which was integrated into the PS5 in 2023 via a previous update. Dolby’s technology is intended more for use on HDMI eARC-compatible audio systems such as soundbars or AV receivers.
Implemented in the PlayStation 5 since its launch, Sony is now upgrading its Tempest 3D AudioTech, enabling all gamers to get the very best out of spatialized sound. As each person is different, and sound reproduction can vary from one headset to another, this calibration will deliver better results in all configurations. This update has been available since July 25, 2024 on the Beta channel of the PS5 firmware, according to Kotaku.

Adaptive charging and Remote Play control
Reserved for “Slim” models of the PS5, adaptive charging will also be implemented on the console’s USB-C ports. This technology, essentially used on smartphone chargers, adjusts charging time according to battery level. This welcome new feature should extend the life of battery-powered accessories that charge directly on the console, such as the DualSense V2 or Pulse 3D headphones. This feature also applies to the PSVR2 and its accessories. What’s more, when no device is connected to the USB port, the console will cut power to save energy.
Finally, it will be possible to control which players can connect to the console via Remote Play. A useful option for limiting remote access for children, for example. According to Sony, the public version of this update is expected in the coming months. We’ll have to be patient for the stable version.

As Sony’s console celebrates its fourth anniversary, the PlayStation 5 operating system continues to benefit from new features. The calibration of 3D audio is a good thing, and will optimize Tempest 3D AudioTech technology on all headphones. Adaptive charging, meanwhile, should also be beneficial for all USB-connected accessories on the console, to extend their lifespan and reduce power consumption.
