At a time when technology is pushing the boundaries of creation, artificial intelligence appears to be ushering in a new era. Is AI a threat for professionals, or simply a fun new creative tool?

With the emergence and increasing popularity of AI tools, many creative professionals and artists are fearing for their jobs. This is the case for musicians, over 200 of whom signed an open letter calling for protections against the predatory use of artificial intelligence in April, but also those in the film industry and visual creatives like photographers and illustrators.
While the powers that be are working to implement regulations so that these tools aren’t misused, the creations of internet “AI artists” reveal a fun, more light-hearted side to this technology with their movie mashups and reimagined cult classics. Here are a few of these wacky creations.
Barbenheimer
In this AI-generated trailer titled “Barbenheimer”, footage from 2023 box office hits Barbie and Oppenheimer are seamlessly blended, creating a mesmerizing and one-of-a-kind experience. The composition of each scene is visually impressive, but the video does have a rather “uncanny valley” feel to it…
The Whimsical Fellowship
In this charming artificial intelligence trailer, Middle Earth is recreated with the distinctive visual and narrative style of director Wes Anderson. Discover Timothée Chalamet as Frodo, Bill Murray as Gandalf, Tilda Swinton as Galadriel and Owen Wilson as Sauron.
Mad Max: Muppets
Here’s a weird one. Motorbikes, trucks, flames, guns and… Muppets. This crazy video depicts the fuzzy friends on a rampage through the desert in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Harry Potter x Stars Wars
Created using Midjourney, ElevenLabs AI and ChatGPT AI technologies, this video explores what a Harry Potter and Star Wars crossover might look like. It’s interesting to see this blend of sci-fi and fantasy, even though it is a bit over the top.
Modern movies with a retro look
Another AI trend is to recreate films and series in different aesthetics. For example, videos from the YouTube channels AIFlickNips and Abandoned Films use a retro Super Panavision 70 effect.
Super Panavision 70 was a technology introduced in the late 1950s that used spherical lenses and a 65 mm film to achieve an aspect ratio of 2.20:1.
The format became iconic for its ability to capture sweeping landscapes and grand, immersive scenes with incredible detail. Films like Exodus, Lawrence of Arabia and 2001: A Space Odyssey were shot in Super Panavision 70. These AI Super Panavision 70 creations have a charming, retro feel that will appeal to many movie fans.
Although these artificial intelligence crossovers may seem a bit silly, they highlight the growing connection between AI and cinema. While professionals express concerns about online programs like Midjourney, DALL-E, and Leonardo AI, which enable anyone to create images and videos, artificial intelligence can be a valuable asset for the film industry.
For example, AI can be used for storyboarding and sound design, or to achieve visually stunning effects and graphics. For some, AI’s goal isn’t necessarily to replace the creativity of directors or the talent of the cast, but to enhance and support their abilities.
