After months of speculation, Nintendo has officially lifted the veil on the Nintendo Switch 2, successor to its flagship console released in 2017. The manufacturer retains the hybrid concept that made the first generation such a success, while making substantial improvements. This first glimpse offers an overview of the new machine, which promises to continue the legacy of its predecessor.

The official Nintendo Switch 2!

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it

The Nintendo Switch 2 has the same design basics of the first Switch, while incorporating some notable evolutions. The console boasts a larger screen and reduced borders, offering enhanced visual immersion. The Joy-Con controllers, now magnetic, have been redesigned for a better grip and improved precision, aimed at resolving the “drift” problems that marked the first generation. These controllers also benefit from new features, such as an additional button whose use has yet to be specified, but could mean the arrival of a sharing function.

In the video, the new Joy-Cons can also be seen walking around like mice, confirming the possibility of using them in a new way, notably with the addition of an optical sensor. Another notable improvement is the console’s reinforced stand. Now wider and adjustable, it provides greater stability, answering the complaints of on-the-go gamers. The dock has also been redesigned, with a reduced size and the addition of a second USB-C port, paving the way for extended connectivity.

Backwards compatibility and plenty of games

One of the most eagerly awaited aspects of Nintendo Switch 2 is backwards compatibility. Nintendo has confirmed that games from the first Switch, whether physical or digital, will be playable on the new console. However, some titles may require adjustments to work properly. This initiative ensures a smooth transition for existing players, while attracting new users.

In terms of hardware evolution, Nintendo has yet to confirm anything, but if recent leaks are to be believed, the console will be far more powerful. This is a welcome development, and will enable it to accommodate the latest generation of games. Speculation suggests that the console will be halfway between a PS4 Pro and an Xbox Series S, which would make sense and be totally in line with Nintendo’s philosophy. Time will tell!
