The image quality of televisions is continuing to improve, driven by advances in video processing, light control and the expansion of color spaces. Sony is following suit with the development of a new display system that promises more accurate and nuanced image reproduction, for creative professionals and home theater enthusiasts alike. What can we expect from this individually controlled RGB backlight technology?

Greater control over light and color
Sony has designed an individually-controlled RGB LED backlighting system that adjusts red, green and blue colors separately. This architecture guarantees a high level of color purity, covering a vast color space (over 99% of DCI-P3 and around 90% of BT.2020). The combination of this high-density backlighting with exclusive light control technology ensures accurately rendered gradations, even on large screens.
This principle is not totally new to the brand, which launched the first LCD TV to feature LED RGB backlighting over its entire surface back in 2004. 96-bit signal processing provides fine contrast and nuance management, while preserving colorimetric consistency over a wide viewing angle. The system also optimizes light output distribution according to the scene, guaranteeing a good balance between brightness and naturalness, with peak brightness in excess of 4,000 cd/m².
Customized image processing and key partners
A dedicated control processor precisely manages the brightness of the RGB LEDs, without saturation or loss of detail in dark areas. This technology doubles the processing capabilities of conventional local dimming systems, ensuring subtle reproduction of intermediate tones. To make this solution a reality, Sony is relying on strategic collaborations: MediaTek develops the control processors, ROHM designs the driver circuits, and Sanan Optoelectronics supplies the LED components. The goal of these partnerships is to integrate this technology into consumer TVs as early as 2025, while meeting the requirements of image professionals.
Innovating in the face of growing technological competition

The global TV market is increasingly competitive, with Chinese brands such as TCL, which is developing its own LCD panels with proprietary high-performance QLED and Mini LED technologies, and Hisense , which unveiled its proprietary RGB Local Dimming backlight technology at CES.
These players offer technologically advanced TVs at aggressive prices, attracting a growing share of the consumer market. In this context, Sony must assert its technological expertise by focusing on image quality and innovation to maintain its legitimacy at the top end of the market. The development of this unprecedented display system enables the manufacturer to set itself apart through color precision, light management and image fidelity – essential criteria for winning over discerning users and content creators alike.
Summary
Faced with growing pressure from the competition, Sony has chosen to capitalize on its expertise in image processing and backlighting to develop a new-generation RGB LED display system. Extensive colorimetric coverage, high brightness, precise gradation and accurate color reproduction characterize this technology, designed for both creative and home viewing applications. By focusing on a distinctive technology, Sony intends to strengthen its position in the high-end segment and maintain its lead over the Chinese brands that are gaining ground.
