Our expert’s opinion

The LG OLED55G5 impressed me with its precision, the depth of its blacks and the dynamic range of its HDR images. The Cinema and Filmmaker modes benefit from excellent calibration, and the image smoothness (up to 165Hz) is ideal for discerning gamers. I loved its sleek design, with its elegant discretion and its ability to fade into the background to leave as much room as possible for the picture. With its fast, customizable and comprehensive interface, webOS 25 is a pleasure to use. I would have appreciated a backlit remote control and more immersive sound, but these minor shortcomings in no way detract from the experience. This LG OLED55G5 TV makes you want to sit back, turn off the lights… and enjoy every shot.

The LG OLED55G5 TV introduces brand-new Tandem OLED technology to boost brightness and enhance its color palette. This way, 4K HDR10 and Dolby Vision content is enhanced, with exceptional picture dynamics. Designed for home theater and 4K 165 Hz gaming, the LG OLED 2025 embodies the manufacturer’s innovative potential in the face of competition from Samsung in the high-end OLED segment.

Included accessories

Designed for wall mounting, the LG OLED55G5 comes with an ultra-thin wall mount, but no stand is supplied by default. To install it on a TV cabinet, you’ll need to purchase the LG SA-G5SN55 base, which is sold separately (€199) and comes with mounting screws and covers to clip on behind the screen and stand.

This TV is controlled using a new-generation Magic Remote. Slightly more compact than the previous version thanks to the absence of the numeric keypad, it unfortunately still lacks backlighting.

The Magic Remote remote control gets a facelift in a more compact format. The click wheel and pointer are back, but there’s still no backlighting!

Test conditions

Our test of the LG OLED55G5 took place in the auditorium of the Nantes Son-Vidéo.com store, with a PlayStation 5 connected via an AudioQuest Forest HDMI cable as the main video source. Both devices were powered by an AudioQuest PowerQuest 303 power strip, to take advantage of a stabilized and filtered power supply. The TV was connected to the store’s WiFi to access replay and streaming services.

My impressions

Ultra-slim design, effective anti-glare and full connectivity

Optional two-position base
Sold separately, the G5 base allows two heights for the screen, for easy installation of a soundbar under the TV.

The design and dimensions of the LG OLED55G5 are identical to those of the G4. It is only 27mm thick and has the same metal frame covering the perimeter of the panel. Note that the optional base allows you to adjust the space under the screen, with two different heights: 3.9cm and 8.4cm, to easily slide a soundbar under the TV.

The G5’s anti-glare filter effectively manages light pollution. In the auditorium of the Son-Vidéo store in Nantes, bathed in natural light, I wasn’t bothered by reflections during the test. Despite the two large windows, I was able to play games, enjoy Blu-rays and streaming services with good viewing comfort. A few slight reflections occasionally appeared during some very dark scenes, but this was nothing like the mirror effect of the first generation OLED TVs.

Even in the middle of the day, despite the presence of two bay windows in the room, light pollution was effectively attenuated by the LG OLED55G5’s anti-glare filter.

As for the connectors, there are four HDMI 2.1 ports compatible with 165Hz 4K and Dolby Vision Gaming (120Hz 4K), with an eARC function on one of them. Three USB ports are also present, as well as an optical audio output and an Ethernet port complemented by WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.

Smooth, responsive WebOS 25 interface

The LG OLED55G5 is powered by the LG webOS 25 interface, with the manufacturer guaranteeing five years of updates for its in-house operating system.

Customizable, it allows you to group your favorite apps and services under Quick Card headings, for quick access from the home menu. The remote control ensures intuitive, responsive navigation, while offering the option of quickly activating voice control and AI with a press of the dedicated button. The TV even recognizes users by their voice, automatically switching to their profile and activating their preferred settings!

webOS 25
As user-friendly as ever, the webOS 25 interface now includes the Xbox Cloud Gaming portal.

Also new for 2025, the introduction of the Xbox Cloud Gaming service extends possibilities for gaming directly on the TV, without the need for a console or PC. Xbox continues to offer Personalized Picture Mode, which lets you create and save a unique setting for each profile, by answering a questionnaire to define your preferences in terms of color temperature, hues, brightness and contrast. New for 2025, the manufacturer has now extended this function to sound, enabling each user to select audio settings to suit their taste, simply by answering a few questions illustrated by sound extracts.

Remote control
The new LG Magic Remote is easy to handle and very practical for everyday use.

The new-generation Magic Remote is extremely practical to use. The on-screen pointer and click wheel, two features exclusive to LG TVs, simplify day-to-day use. I wish the manufacturer had finally decided to provide backlighting for the keys…

4K HDR image at its best!

The LG OLED55G5 boasts an ideally calibrated image right out of the box if you select Cinema or Filmmaker mode. Optimized year after year, OLED Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro technology is particularly effective at adjusting the brightness of HDR images, and takes full advantage of the capabilities of the new OLED Tandem RGB panel. Highlights are vivid while retaining subtle nuances, while dark areas take advantage of OLED’s black depth and infinite gradations to display a wealth of detail. Every pixel is perfectly exploited to deliver ultra-realistic definition and image precision that enhances 4K content.

With Alien (Blu-ray 4K HDR10), I was immediately immersed in the oppressive, claustrophobic atmosphere of the Nostromo. The lights and shadows in the corridors were perfectly rendered, as was the rich color palette of the sets, costumes and skin tones.

On both Top Gun: Maverick and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the G5 confirmed its mastery of color and wide dynamic range images (4K Dolby Vision). A real feast for the eyes! Fluidity was also excellent, provided I activated the True Motion option (cinematic motion mode). The TV provided an immersive experience that made for some great adrenaline rushes!

4K HDR streaming was also impressive. With a sufficiently fast Internet connection, you can enjoy superb picture quality. This was particularly true when I followed the adventures of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May behind the wheel of their racing cars on Prime Video.

High-quality upscaling

The Full HD 1080p image of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Blu-ray benefited from very good upscaling. The new, second-generation α11 AI processor effectively enhanced the overall image definition. Close-ups of faces gained in precision and were enriched with multiple details (pores, wrinkles, hair), all without generating noise or artifacts. Perfect for enhancing your Blu-ray collection!

Audio: what happened to DTS?

This LG TV features the same 4.2-channel, 60-watt audio system as its predecessor, with the possibility, according to LG, of enjoying virtual surround sound on up to 11.1.2 channels, compared to 9.1.2 previously.

Support for Dolby Atmos is of course still in place, but DTS has now been dropped altogether, just two years after it was reintroduced (on LG OLED 2023 TVs).

Ford V Ferrari
No matter how many times you look through the options on this TV, you won’t find DTS compatibility, which LG has abandoned again!

During my test, I didn’t notice any real evolution compared to the 2024 and 2023 models in terms of sound spatialization. Effects benefit from a convincing stereo amplitude and a certain height, but still remain very frontal. As for low frequencies, they remain timid, with little impact and depth, which can be explained by the reduced size of the drivers, due to the thinness of the screen. It’s a pity that the manufacturer didn’t include the option of connecting a subwoofer to this TV.

For movies and TV series, I chose the Cinema mode, activating the AI Audio enhancement. This expands the sound around the screen, but without generating a real sound bubble. If, like me, you’re looking for a more immersive sound experience, I’d recommend pairing this TV with a soundbar, ideally an LG model to benefit from WoW Orchestra technology, which combines the sound of the soundbar with that of the TV.

With daily TV programs, talk shows, documentaries and news programs, the AI Clear Sound function (with Voice Remastering mode) proves invaluable for clearly distinguishing the voices of the people on screen.

A TV made for gaming

The LG OLED55G5 TV’s panel delivers an almost instantaneous response time of 0.1 ms GtG. Optimized for excellent responsiveness (ALLM, Nvidia G-Sync, AMD FreeSync), it features input lag of less than 10 ms and VRR up to 165Hz, so you can enjoy the latest games in the best possible conditions, on console or PC, including games edited in Dolby Vision Gaming (up to 120Hz 4K).

With Gran Turismo 7 on PS5, I was able to enjoy a very smooth display and exemplary responsiveness. It was great fun, enhanced tenfold by the superb HDR image quality.

This LG TV also features the Game Optimizer menu, providing direct access to video game information and settings. These appear superimposed on the screen and allow you to adjust several parameters (image modes adapted to the type of game and ambient lighting, black/white balance, contrast, black level). In particular, brightness can be adjusted in dark areas of the image, making it easier to flush out opponents and hidden objects.

My recommended image settings

Here are my favorite settings for watching movies and series during the day in a moderately bright room. You can, of course, adjust them according to your preferences and viewing conditions.

LG OLED G5: Alien (07)
The LG OLED55G5’s Cinema and Filmmaker picture modes deliver particularly lifelike images, with accurate colors, perfectly controlled brightness and excellent handling of HDR content.
My expert advice
As far as picture is concerned, for films and series, whether on Blu-ray or on streaming platforms, I recommend that you use Cinema mode during the day and Filmmaker mode at night. They are very well calibrated and guarantee a picture that remains faithful to the director's intentions.
Regarding sound, I invite you to try out the cinema mode with AI Audio enhancement, which optimizes spatialization quite spectacularly, particularly in terms of width and, to a lesser extent, height.

LG OLED55G5 compared to LG OLED55G4

LG OLED55G4
With its superior brightness and 4K 165Hz compatibility, the G5 takes the lead over the G4 for both movies and video games.

The LG OLED55G5 provides a significantly higher brightness thanks to its Tandem OLED panel, surpassing the G4’s META 2.0 technology for HDR content. It will appeal to anyone looking for an even more striking image. Both TVs benefit from the α11 AI 4K processor, albeit the second-generation for the G5, which makes further progress in image processing. Display frequency now reaches 165Hz, compared to 144Hz for the G4, another advantage for discerning gamers. As for the interface, WebOS 25 remains similar to WebOS 24, albeit with a new audio customization function. What’s more, the G4 has the advantage of DTS support (passthrough), which is absent on the new model.

LG OLED55G5 compared to Samsung TQ55S95F

Samsung TQ55S95F
The Samsung S95F offers a certified glare-free screen, providing unrivaled viewing comfort in a bright room. Too bad it doesn’t support Dolby Vision!

Both TVs target home theater and gaming enthusiasts (165Hz 4K). The LG impresses with its new-generation ultra-bright panel (Tandem OLED), HDR management and video processing (α11 AI processor), as well as Dolby Vision and HDR10 compatibility. It shines with its sleek design and customizable WebOS 25 interface. Opposite it, the Samsung S95F boasts highly effective anti-glare filter, a practical One Connect remote connector box and advanced AI functions (Live Translate, Click to Search). It delivers a beautiful OLED image and more powerful sound (70W), but the absence of Dolby Vision remains a weak point compared to the LG, and its matte panel somewhat attenuates the depth of blacks.

Who is the LG OLED55G5 designed for?

The LG OLED55G5 is for anyone who wants to experience movies, TV series and video games on a grand scale, with an exceptional picture and a design that enhances the living room. Whether you’re a movie buff, a gamer or a high-tech enthusiast, there’s something for everyone, thanks to remarkable smoothness, spectacular HDR rendering and a particularly intuitive connected interface. A TV designed for audio and image pleasure, without compromise.
