FiiO FT1 hi-fi headphones

The FiiO FT1 hi-fi headphones with their walnut ear cups impressed music lovers this month.
  • Closed-back over-ear headphones
  • 60mm dynamic transducers
  • Frequency response: 10Hz – 40kHz
  • Sensitivity: 98 dB
  • Impedance: 32 ohms
  • Walnut ear cups
  • 340g

I was looking for a pair of small, pleasant, high-performance and inexpensive closed headphones, and I found it. Light but solid, well built, you don’t have to worry about carrying them around, they’re comfortable to wear and don’t get too warm for a closed-back model (this was an important criterion for me). The sound is very decent for the price! It’s very uniform and balanced, despite a V-shaped curve. Listening to it, there’s almost nothing missing, and it’s rare to find such homogeneity. Bass is present, deep and clean, with nuance and range, punch if needed, but it stays in its place, doesn’t spill over, and is very well grafted to the midrange. At this price, I’d say they’re excellent headphones for mixed leisure/audiophile or even studio use. A very good choice for a first pair of high quality headphones. A great gift idea too!

Samsung TQ65S95D QD-OLED TV

The Samsung TQ65S95D QD-OLED TV is among the best reviews of the month
  • Screen diagonal: 65 inches (165cm)
  • OLED panel and Quantum Dots
  • Glare-free screen
  • Resolution: 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels)
  • HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos
  • 4x 144Hz 4K HDMI 2.1 ports
  • Dimensions with base (WxHxD): 1443.5 x 894.4 x 267.9mm

The first shock is visual: picture quality is simply outstanding. Third-generation QD-OLED technology, coupled with the new anti-reflective coating, delivers a stunning cinematic experience, even in broad daylight. Whether for 4K HDR movies or video games, the experience is spectacular. The design is also a great success. With its ultra-thin profile and almost invisible edges, the TV seems to float and blends into a living room with a rare elegance. The only point on which I’m a little more measured concerns sound quality. While it’s perfectly decent and clear for everyday use, it can’t match the visual immersion provided by the screen. For a truly complete home theater experience, the addition of a soundbar or dedicated audio system is, in my opinion, essential to match this prodigious image. In conclusion, despite this slight audio drawback, the Samsung TQ65S95D is an exceptional product that I recommend without the slightest hesitation.

Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-600M II bookshelf speakers

Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-600M II speakers
  • 2-way speaker
  • Bass-reflex with Tractrix port
  • 1x 6.5″ midbass driver
  • 1x 1″ aluminum tweeter with titanium dome
  • Power handling: 100W (400W peak)
  • Sensitivity: 94.5 dB /W/m

Excellent! First of all, these speakers have absolutely no coloration. That’s rare enough to be worth mentioning. Dynamics are impressive (the difference between the loudest and softest notes). Transparency is quite good, with plenty of detail. These speakers are capable of reproducing all styles of music. I was surprised by the ease with which they transcribed complex symphonic passages. Everything remains smooth. You’re in direct contact with the music. These speakers have a lot of presence and punch. If you really want to experience the emotion of a concert, these Klipsch speakers are for you. In conclusion, I warmly recommend them for their musicality.

Argon Audio TT-3 Plus hi-fi turntable

TT-3 Plus white turntable on a wooden cabinet
  • Manual turntable
  • Belt drive
  • Switchable phono preamp
  • 0.735g aluminum platter
  • Carbon fiber tonearm
  • Ortofon 2M Red MM cartridge
  • Weight: 7.2kg

This turntable has a simple, efficient design. As for the build quality, there’s nothing to complain about – there’s just one minor problem: the small attachment for the tonearm when the turntable isn’t spinning is made of plastic and seems rather fragile, otherwise everything else is top quality: Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, carbon fiber tonearm, counterweight, anti-skating, RIAA preamp… This is a good audiophile turntable, the audio definition is very good, there’s just a slight lack of warmth for my taste, but that’s a personal opinion. But the resolution is very good. In conclusion, I highly recommend this high quality European brand.

Elipson Prestige Subwoofer 12.1

Black Elipson Prestige Subwoofer 12.1 in a living room
  • Wireless subwoofer
  • Bass reflex
  • 300W of power
  • 11.8″ fiberglass driver
  • Frequency response: 25 to 200Hz

Well, it’s not yet broken in, but it already sounds very good, not quite powerful enough for a large room (50m²), so I’m thinking of buying a second one to get a better result. But with just one, you can already feel the low frequencies, and it goes down really low: 25Hz. I also use it for audio, where it perfectly complements my old Studio Lab SLB 202s, which cut off at 45Hz but still sound great.

Cayin SC-6LS MK2 hi-fi preamplifier

Cayin SC-6LS MK2 hi-fi preamp
  • Stereo hi-fi preamplifier
  • 4 x 22DEA tubes + 2 x 12AU7(EH) tubes
  • Frequency response: 5Hz to 100Hz
  • Output voltage: 2V (22V max.)
  • Gain: 15 dB
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: 95 dB

From the very first listening session (Stacey Kent), everything seemed clear, simple and obvious. The bass was a little invasive and slightly “flabby”, but this was mainly due to the placement of the speakers. Today, halfway through the running-in of the tubes, the sound has become much firmer, and the tiniest details have become brighter. I repositioned the speakers to improve the bass reproduction which is now tauter, better integrated. The result is a very balanced soundstage, except perhaps for large choral pieces, where the compromises involved in recording large ensembles – and the limits of sampling rates on streaming services – are sometimes noticeable. A fun detail: I was expecting to receive a plastic remote control (after all, as McIntosh says, “we make amplifiers, not remote controls”). And yet, no: it’s a beautiful piece of anodized aluminum. McIntosh should take note. This preamp is a real success.
