Nintendo has unveiled its financial results for the quarter that ended on June 30, 2025, marking an exceptional start to the fiscal year buoyed by the launch of Nintendo Switch 2. With a sharp rise in sales and record figures, the Japanese company has started its financial year on a very positive note.

Record sales for the Nintendo Switch 2: 5.8 million units since its launch.

Sales boosted by the Nintendo Switch 2

For the period of April to June 2025, Nintendo recorded sales of 572 billion yen (approx. $3.8 billion), up 132% on the previous year. Operating profit rose more modestly, to 56.8 billion yen (+4.4%), while net profit reached 96 billion yen (+18.6%). Only ordinary profit fell by 15.6%, to 95.8 billion yen.

🗒️ Expert's note
Ordinary profit refers to the profit made by a company based on its core activities and its usual financial income and expenses, but before exceptional items and taxes. It is a key indicator of a company's recurring economic performance.

This growth is mainly due to the highly successful launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, which sold 3.5 million units in just four days after its release on June 5. Over the quarter as a whole, 5.82 million units were sold worldwide, a launch that Nintendo describes as the biggest ever for one of its gaming hardware products. By way of comparison, the first Nintendo Switch sold 0.98 million units over the same period.

Games sales at a steady pace, with a slight decline in digital sales

In terms of games, Mario Kart World, the flagship launch title for Nintendo’s new console, got off to an excellent start with 5.63 million units sold, a figure that includes copies supplied in bundles with the console. In total, Nintendo Switch 2 games sold 8.67 million copies during the quarter.

Titles for the original Nintendo Switch also continue to sell well: Nintendo has announced 24.4 million units sold for video games on this platform, thanks in particular to intergenerational games such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Party Jamboree, which are also compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.

In a year, digital sales fell by 13.5%, as gamers preferred games that were also available on cartridge. Similarly, licensing revenues (films, merchandising, etc.) fell by 4.4%, which Nintendo attributes to the absence of major new film releases since Super Mario Bros. in 2023.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A video game to boost Nintendo Switch 2 sales.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is eagerly awaited. It should also help sell more Nintendo Switch 2 systems.

Nintendo Switch 2: a bright future ahead

Despite some setbacks in digital and derivative products, Nintendo remains optimistic. The group has not changed its forecasts for the current fiscal year, which call for 63.1% sales growth by March 2026. The strategy is based on maintaining the momentum around Mario Kart World and the launch of eagerly awaited titles such as Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Faced with higher than expected demand, production of the Nintendo Switch 2 is being stepped up. President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed this during a call to investors in July: the objective is clear, to avoid shortages and respond to the worldwide craze for this new-generation hybrid console.
