At IFA 2025, the turntable specialist unveiled a record player that represents a new step in its strategy. With the Technics SL-40CBT model, the Japanese manufacturer is targeting a wider audience, well beyond discerning audiophiles and DJs. New design, integrated Bluetooth, simplicity of use: this turntable breaks with the historical codes of the famous brand, while retaining certain technical fundamentals. What does this fresh new model really offer?

A sleek design
The Technics SL-40CBT turntable is a clear departure from the traditional lines of the historic SL-1200 models. The aluminum chassis has been replaced by a composite material divided into two blocks. This lighter, sleeker structure is reminiscent of consumer turntables, such as those offered by Audio-Technica and Teac.
The platter, too, has evolved: it is now raised, with no grooved edges or recesses in the chassis. This is a first for Technics. This aesthetic and functional choice goes hand in hand with the simplicity of use sought by music lovers. The controls are grouped around the Start/Stop button on the left-hand side, in streamlined ergonomic design.

Technics SL-40CBT: the appearance of Bluetooth
This is one of the major new features of the Technics SL-40CBT turntable: Bluetooth connectivity. The Japanese firm has integrated a wireless transmitter that allows vinyl sound to be broadcast to any Bluetooth speaker or amp. This feature eliminates the need for cables, making the turntable much easier to install in a living room or bedroom. This is a first for the brand, demonstrating its willingness to open up to new uses, one year after the release of its SC-CX700 wireless hi-fi speakers.

Technics expertise as heritage
Despite this new strategic direction, the manufacturer is not completely turning the tables. Indeed, the Technics SL-40CBT record player remains true to some of the key features that make up the Technics DNA. These include the manual design and direct drive for which the brand is renowned. Also, a die-cast aluminum platter, powered by a direct-drive motor, a technology prized for its rotational stability and reliability, and a true trademark of the Japanese firm.
Another signature feature of the brand, the S-shaped tonearm is also included. It comes with an adjustable counterweight and an anti-skating system, as found on higher-end models. Only the VTA adjustment is absent, in line with the turntable’s mainstream orientation.

Simple, ready-to-use configuration
The Technics SL-40CBT stands out for its ease of use. It comes with a factory-pre-assembled and aligned Audio-Technica AT-VM95C cartridge. This conical diamond cartridge provides a functional base that can be easily replaced by a higher-performance model from the AT-VM95 range.
A switchable phono preamp is also integrated, for immediate compatibility with any amplifier or pair of active speakers. Finally, the SL-40CBT retains the adjustable anti-vibration feet characteristic of Technics models, ensuring good stability and effective isolation.

Scheduled for release in September, this Technics SL-40CBT turntable will be offered in three finishes: terracotta, light gray and charcoal black. These colors have been designed to harmonize with the Technics SC-CX700 connected speakers. The launch price has not yet been announced.

The terracotta looks really nice. Hopefully Technics release a model without BT and the built -in phono for those of us who want to use it as a second TT with extra components we already have.
