Our expert’s opinion

The Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen headphones impressed me with their refined aesthetics and excellent build quality. I was delighted to rediscover the DNA of the original model, while enjoying a more balanced, composed listening experience. The bass is better controlled, the midrange is clearer, and the highs are smooth and precise, yet balanced, making the reproduction more natural. Comfort, too, has improved significantly thanks to the new ear pads.
Although the included USB-C DAC already provides very satisfactory sound reproduction with a smartphone or computer, pairing the headphones with a higher-quality DAC and a more generously rated headphone amplifier allows them to truly shine. The stereo image widens, the bass becomes more nuanced, and vocals take on a striking depth.
At this level of performance, the price remains particularly competitive. They're a real bargain for anyone looking for elegant, well-built, closed-back headphones. A must-have reference and a safe choice in their price category, whether you're a discerning music lover or a budding audiophile.

In the space of a decade, the Meze 99 Classics headphones have become truly iconic, renowned for their elegant aesthetics, warm reproduction and universal comfort. For this second version, Meze Audio promises a more balanced sound signature, improved stereo coherence and a few more welcome adjustments. Priced at €349, this new version is available now from Son-Vidéo.com. Are they still appealing with this discreet but technical update? And above all, do the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen meet the expectations of a more demanding public?

Presentation

Building on the strengths that made the first generation so successful, the Meze Audio 99 Classics 2nd Gen combine a refined design with optimized acoustics. Thanks to a more balanced sound signature, durable materials and extended compatibility, they aim to offer a precise, comfortable sound, now focused on high fidelity and approaching neutrality.

Refined design and enhanced comfort

Aesthetically, the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen retain the iconic silhouette and hand-crafted look for which the original model was renowned, and all the better for it! However, several subtle but significant changes have been made.

  • Meze 99 Classics v2 front view on a headphones stand
  • Meze 99 Classics v2 seen in profile on a headphones stand

The main difference lies in the enlargement of the wooden ear cups and the widening of the earpads, to an extent that only slightly alters the external appearance of these magnificent headphones. The overall width increases from 170 to 185 millimeters, and the width of the pads from 85 to 95 millimeters. But once the headphones are on, comfort is greatly improved, with more room for the ears.

The Meze 99 Classics V2 ear pads feature a soft, pleasant-to-the-touch vegan leatherette covering, and the foam is flexible enough to adapt to all users, with or without glasses, without compromising comfort. They provide passive isolation that is effective enough to attenuate ambient sounds and voices in an open-plan office.

The wood used for the ear cups is still solid walnut, ensuring perfect aesthetic continuity between the two generations. However, keen observers may notice a subtle difference in the jack connectors on the earpieces, which are now wider and feature an acoustic vent, built directly into the metal insert.

Meze has enlarged the connectors on the earpieces: they now accept 3.5mm mini-jack cables with plugs measuring up to 7mm in diameter.

The self-adjusting headband in vegan leather, the spring-steel frame and the gold-finish zinc-cast elements remain identical to the original model, and all components are still replaceable.

Acoustic optimization and stereo precision

In addition to freeing up space for the ears, the enlarged ear cups also aim to modify resonance and optimize the sound reproduction. The internal architecture of the transducers has been revised, with a more open grille to improve sound diffusion and modified reinforcements to limit diffraction and reduce high-frequency distortion.

The Romanian manufacturer has redesigned the transducer architecture of the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen to optimize sound diffusion and reduce distortion.

In addition, the manufacturer has refined the balance between the two transducers by applying a precise calibration process during assembly. Advanced algorithms reduce response variations between the left and right transducers, often unavoidable in production. This process is designed to guarantee more faithful stereo reproduction, with greater precision in the localization of instruments and voices, while ensuring consistent performance from one headphone to the next. This reinforces the sensation of space and coherence in the sound image, essential for truly immersive sound, especially at high volume.

Meze 99 Classics: view of the headphones with the ear pads removed
Compared to the first generation, the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen’s earpads have been enlarged and feature a 6-point fastening system, improving their hold for a better seal.

In addition to this, sealing has been reinforced at the critical junction points between the various parts of the headphones (earcup, pad and connector). This limits internal sound leaks that can affect acoustic pressure, especially at low frequencies. The goal is to offer better control of the low-frequency response and greater coherence between the two sides of the headphones (left/right).

The metal part housing the headphones’ mini-jack connector now incorporates a port for adjusting the air pressure inside the shell.

Finally, a port has been integrated into each ear cup, close to the jack connector. This small hole regulates the air pressure in each ea rcup, acting like the bass-reflex port in a speaker. It allows for precise adjustment of the bass response without causing unwanted resonance, and also contributes to the balance between the left and right channels.

All these modifications contribute to ensuring a stable, uniform acoustic response across the entire frequency range.

Accessories and modernized connectors

Close-up of the Meze 99 Classics gen 2 headphones' cable
The Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen now come with a single Y-cable measuring 1.8m in length. The latter features twisted, Kevlar-sheathed OFC (oxygen-free copper) conductors.

As far as accessories are concerned, a single cable is now supplied, as opposed to the previous two. The manufacturer has abandoned the 1.2-meter control interface and microphone cable, as well as the 3-meter hi-fi cable, in favor of an intermediate-length mini-jack cable measuring 1.8 meters, still accompanied by a 6.35mm jack adapter for connection to hi-fi components and headphones.

USB-C audio DAC supplied as standard with Meze 99 Classics 2nd gen headphones
Meze delivers a mini USB-C DAC with the 99 Classics 2nd Gen, making it easy to connect the headphones to any smartphone or computer to enjoy Hi-Res audio files.

Another new feature of this second generation is a 24-bit/384kHz PCM -compatible USB-C amplified DAC, included as standard. This enables the headphones to be used with recent smartphones without headphone jacks, as well as with any laptop, so you can fully enjoy high-resolution audio content.

Test conditions

The test took place at my home, in a quiet environment, as well as in the editorial team’s open plan office. I used the USB-C DAC supplied with the headphones by connecting it to my Android smartphone, to listen to locally stored Hi-Res tracks as well as music streamed from Qobuz via the USB Audio Player Pro app. I also used the DAC supplied by Meze with my laptop to listen to music via the Audirvana, Roon and Qobuz apps.

Last but not least, I also tested these headphones with a Lehmann Audio Linear amp powered by a DAC equipped with an ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M converter, as well as a tube amp associated with a DAC featuring an Asahi Kasei AK4493EQ chip.

📝 Expert's note
Important to know if you're using a USB DAC on an Android device
By default, Android applies automatic processing to all sounds coming out of the smartphone, via an internal "mixer". This system often converts audio files, limiting their quality. For example, a 96 or 192kHz track will be reduced to 48kHz, and 24-bit files are sometimes reduced to 16-bit. Android therefore does not transmit the raw audio stream to the DAC: it modifies it (volume, notifications, effects), preventing bit-perfect playback.
To bypass these limitations and take full advantage of a USB DAC, the use of a dedicated app such as HiBy Music, FiiO Music or USB Audio Player Pro is highly recommended. The latter access the DAC directly, bypassing the Android audio system completely. The result: high-resolution playback at up to 384kHz/32-bit or DSD, without conversion or alteration.
Note that the free HiBy Music and FiiO Music apps enable bit-perfect playback, but only for audio files stored locally on the smartphone. To take things a step further, the fee-based USB Audio Player Pro app not only offers this functionality, but also direct access to Qobuz and Tidal in bit perfect. It also features a host of advanced settings, making it a particularly comprehensive solution for discerning users.

My listening impressions

Lovely Day – Bill Withers (24-bit/96kHz)

Combined with their USB-C DAC, the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen impressed us from the very first seconds of this track with their balance and natural sound. Bill Withers’ voice took center stage with clarity, density and warmth, perfectly detached from the backing vocals, which were also perfectly positioned in the stage.

The bassline descended with assurance, ample without overflowing, supported by dynamic drums and crisp cymbals. The strings glided smoothly, adding a nice texture to the mix. The brass section, meanwhile, was both rich and full-bodied.

The overall sound was smooth and controlled, with slightly softened but never dull highs. The listening experience was fluid, not tiring, and very pleasant.

When connected to a more powerful DAC and a tube headphone amplifier, the headphones had more shine in the top end of the spectrum, with more depth in the attacks, a broader soundstage, and even better vocal presence.

Take the Power Back – Rage Against the Machine (24-bit/44.1kHz)

On this edgier track, the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen proved that they were able to follow complex rhythms without losing clarity. The guitar was incisive, the bass well defined, even if it could have done with being a little more engaging. The bass drum hits were firm, and the hi-hat remained lively and well defined.

Zack de la Rocha’s voice burst forth with impact right from the introduction, with plosives and sibilants reproduced with remarkable precision. Despite the density of the mix, each element remained in place, with no saturation even at high volumes.

The combination with the ESS Sabre DAC and Lehmann Audio amplifier delivered greater responsiveness and intensity in the bass, finesse in the highs, and enhanced vocal presence, with a greater sense of immersion.

Tomorrow is Perfect – Mark William Lewis (24-bit/96kHz)

This track, which combines subtle acoustics and rhythmic energy, benefited greatly from the Meze’s expressive sound. The bass was tight, well-defined, and offered a nice volume.

The acoustic instruments (guitar, drums, piano) were perfectly defined, with plenty of space in the soundstage. The singer’s warm, husky voice was natural and commanding, while the backing vocals were seamlessly incorporated.

With the Asahi Kasei DAC and tube amp, the bass became fuller, the lead vocals more textured and full-bodied, and the guitar more structured. The whole track sounded more open, and the listening experience was even more lively, detailed and nuanced.

Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen compared to the original Meze 99 Classics

Original Meze 99 Classics headphones (v1)
The first-generation Meze 99 Classics seduced with its handcrafted charm and warm, punchy sound signature, more expressive and demonstrative than that of the second generation.

Although aesthetically very similar, the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen headphones differ significantly from the first generation in terms of sound. The design remains handcrafted, with the same walnut ear cups and iconic self-adjusting headband, but the enlarged ear pads and redesigned interior improve ergonomics and acoustics.

The 2nd Gen retains the warm character of the original, but the listening experience gains in balance. The bass is better controlled, more articulate, and the highs seem smoother. The midrange sounds slightly more pronounced, with better overall coherence. Where the first version impressed with its generosity and punch, the second shines with its controlled neutrality and accuracy. In addition, the transducers are better matched, resulting in a more accurate stereo response.

This second version preserves the sonic identity of the 99 Classics, while toning down some of the exuberance. It is more suited to those seeking a balanced sound reproduction rather than a spectacular listening experience.

Meze 99 Classics V2 compared to the Sennheiser HD 620S

Sennheiser HD620S headphones worn by a man listening to music with his eyes closed
The Sennheiser HD 620S offers a more analytical and airy listening experience than the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen, emphasizing clarity and precision where the Meze relies on warmth and softness.

In contrast to the Sennheiser HD 620S, the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen offer a warmer, more organic approach. Both are closed-back circumaural headphones designed for home use, but their design differs. The Meze headphones feature wooden earcups and a lightweight floating structure; the Sennheiser model prefers more traditional materials, with a more robust design.

In terms of sound, the HD 620S impress with a surprisingly wide soundstage for closed-back headphones, as well as clarity and precision at the top end of the spectrum. Their tight, well-integrated bass is generally less generous than that of the Meze. The 99 Classics 2nd Gen favor roundness and euphony, with a fuller low midrange.

For longer listening sessions, the Meze headphones are softer, while the Sennheiser HD 620S impress with their definition and spatial imaging. The choice will depend on personal taste: the enveloping warmth of the Meze or the analytical clarity of the Sennheiser.

Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen compared to HiFiMAN Edition XV

HiFiMAN Edition XV headphones on a piano
In contrast to the open, analytical HiFiMAN Edition XV, the Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen offer a more intimate, warm and isolated listening experience, designed for comfort and versatility.

The Meze 99 Classics 2nd Gen and the HiFiMAN Edition XV have two very different technical approaches.

The Meze are compact, dynamic closed-back headphones designed for versatile listening on the move or at home. The HiFiMAN, open-back planar headphones offer an airy listening experience, with a very wide soundstage and great transparency. On the other hand, they provide no isolation, letting outside noise pass through and diffusing music to the surrounding environment.

The Meze 99 Classics V2, with their closed design and enveloping ear pads, provide effective passive isolation, allowing you to shut out the outside world and enjoy your music in a moderately noisy environment. This makes them more suitable for shared spaces or extended listening sessions without any distractions.

In terms of sound, the HiFiMAN’s soundstage is broader and more analytical, while the Meze offers a more intimate presentation, with more assertive bass and warmer reproduction.
