Previewed at the Paris Audio Video Show 2025, the new range of Audio-Technica AT33x moving-coil cartridges is now available from Son-Vidéo.com. It includes five models, two of which are dedicated to mono records. The AT33x series builds on the well-known foundations of the AT33 range, launched 10 years ago, but also benefits from significant innovations. These include new materials and several technical improvements to enhance playback stability and signal accuracy.

AT33x cartridges: a zinc base for greater precision
The most notable change to the Audio-Technica AT33x range is the introduction of die-cast zinc, used for the first time by the Japanese brand. This material, which is denser and more rigid than those used on the first generation of cartridges, significantly reduces vibrations. The result is sharper sound reproduction, particularly in the midrange and bass, with better articulation of the fundamentals. The zinc base is part of a hybrid construction that also combines aluminum and a high-rigidity polymer, each strategically positioned to disperse resonance.

Optimized performance across the range
The Audio-Technica AT33x series includes five models: three stereo (AT33xEN, AT33xMLD, AT33xMLB) and two monophonic (AT33xMONO/I and AT33xMONO/II). All feature a dual voice coil generator, ensuring better channel separation and extended frequency response. The flagship of the range, the Audio-Technica AT33xMLB, features a conical boron cantilever and a MicroLinear stylus, guaranteeing incredibly precise playback and excellent control over the entire bandwidth from 20Hz to 45kHz.

As for the mono models, the AT33xMONO/II adopts a samarium-cobalt magnet and a pure iron yoke. This configuration enables smooth, detailed playback of monophonic records, with richly textured rendering. A “True Mono” architecture is also implemented, with a specific voice coil adapted to the horizontal grooves of mono records, thus limiting vertical noise.

Note from the expert
A mono cartridge provides optimum playback of a monophonic record. The cartridge produces a single signal which it transmits to each of the two channels of the audio system. The result is a sound image that is dynamic, stable and richer in detail than a stereo cartridge, which will suffer from imperfections (crosstalk, tracking error, distortion) with monophonic pressings.
A redesigned, more adaptable suspension
All Audio-Technica AT33x hi-fi cartridges feature a new suspension. They benefit from an innovative mechanism offering slightly lower dynamic compliance than previous models. This technical peculiarity expands configuration possibilities, notably with more types of tonearms. As a result, the AT33x cartridges are more versatile, facilitating their integration into a wide variety of hi-fi systems.
Handcrafted finish and attention to detail
Each cartridge in the AT33x series is hand-assembled in Japan by experienced technicians. This process combines precision machining and meticulous adjustments, in keeping with the artisanal approach that characterizes the Japanese brand. Audio-Technica says: “This dedication reflects the enduring spirit of Japanese craftsmanship that continues to define Audio-Technica.” The entire range is also delivered in plastic-free packaging, made exclusively from recyclable paper, in keeping with an increasingly environmentally-aware approach.
