Octavio Stream G2

Already a winner with its first version, the Octavio Stream G2 takes accessible high-fidelity even further. Designed and assembled in France, the Octavio Stream G2 is the ideal solution for bringing a traditional system into the age of digital music. While this new version retains its ultra-compact format, it has clearly gained in acoustic maturity, with greater depth and fullness than its predecessor. The more assertive low-midrange supports a sound reproduction that retains its excellent openness. Via a Bit-Perfect optical connection to an external DAC, it becomes a digital transport of impeccable neutrality, capable of diffusing Qobuz or Tidal streams without alteration. The ergonomic Virtuose app, developed in-house, completes the experience with exemplary seamlessness.
Depending on whether or not you use the internal DAC, the same connector combines an optical output before the DAC and a 3.5mm jack to RCA output post DAC (cables supplied). The device connects via Wi-Fi and Ethernet with the optional kit (€20). Wi-Fi network detection and password entry are performed via Virtuose, the in-house developed app whose ergonomics are particularly well designed. And the sound? Already highly acclaimed considering the price of the G1 version, it has matured even further with the G2. Comparatively speaking, the latter provides greater depth and richness to the sound reproduction. The lower midrange is more assertive, a criticism that could be leveled at the G1 version, whose airiness and sense of musical freedom are preserved here. The bulk of this contribution comes from the streamer, as can be seen when comparing the two versions using an external DAC. The G2 therefore has the upper hand, with openness and universality to boot!

iFi Audio iDSD Valkyrie

The iFi Audio iDSD Valkyrie Gold establishes itself as a pinnacle of portable digital engineering. Equipped with a Quad Burr-Brown DAC architecture and a custom FPGA capable of remastering streams to DSD1024 resolution, it offers a smoothness and absence of distortion reminiscent of the best studio sources. Its colossal power reserve enables it to tame the most demanding headphones, while exclusive filters like the remarkable GTO mode provide rare density and expressiveness. The 20,000 mAh battery provides up to 18 hours of autonomy, guaranteeing total sonic purity, free from mains noise. Whether used as a DAC in a living-room system or on the move, it reveals the substance of every recording with natural authority.
This profusion of digital technology is joined by an avalanche of specific audio circuits inserted in the analog section, such as XBass II, XPresence and XSpace, respectively bass, midrange and soundstage enhancers. Systems suited for headphone listening, generally not recommended for use with a DAC connected to an amplifier and speakers. With a streamer on the USB-C input and our integrated amplifier on the RCA output, the result is stunning. Once you’ve mastered the controls, it’s time to play with the DAC’s six filters—our favorite? GTO, which boosts the signal to 352.8/384kHz. The Bit Perfect position delivers unprocessed sound with unprecedented ease and transparency. The GTO filter adds substance, expressiveness and density; the K2 modes, both regular and HD, provides an extra bit of beauty and smoothness. The DSD512 achieves a good compromise between openness and articulation. And on headphones, XSpace is a real asset. An overachiever, that’s what it is, worthy of its vocation as a mastering machine.

Pro-ject Debut Carbon Evo II

Heir to an award-winning lineage, the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo II takes refinement to a new level. Handcrafted in Europe, it replaces the steel platter with a 1.7kg aluminum model that uses a TPE elastomer ring for damping, guaranteeing perfect inertia and silent operation. Its famous 8.6″ carbon fiber tonearm benefits from a new, more rigid aluminum bearing block for enhanced tracking accuracy. Combined with the new Pick It MM Evo cartridge, this turntable surprises with its clarity and clear attacks. The soundstage gains definition, offering clear tones that aren’t veiled in any way. A highly recommended model that combines timeless aesthetics with rigorous musicality.
Our first impulse was to compare the two turntables, the Debut Evo 2 and its predecessor. The comparison was made using a Phono Box DS3 B stage from the same brand. Both models come with a detachable, semi-balanced Connect It RCA cable (with ground connected at one end only). These details make all the difference, as does the presence of the Pick It MM Evo, a moving magnet cartridge with a high dynamic range, equipped with an elliptical stylus, an output level of 7mV, and 22 dB channel separation at 1kHz. Switching from one to the other, we noticed a clear improvement in transients and attack sharpness, more stable layers and better noise reduction. A better-defined soundstage and crisper tones, with no halo or softness. Confronted with a complex track, the Evo 2 rose to the challenge and held its own as a highly recommendable record player at an attractive price. And it’s made in Europe.

McIntosh MSA5500

The McIntosh MSA5500 marks a historic milestone for the Binghamton-based company, integrating a high-resolution streamer at the heart of its audiophile architecture for the first time. This integrated device delivers 100W into 8 ohms with disconcerting dynamic ease, capable of materializing music with rare sensuality and intensity. Its Quad Balanced architecture and 32-bit DAC ensure crystal-clear conversion, while Qobuz Connect compatibility frees the signal from any unnecessary intermediaries. The sound is solid, organic, and deep, true to the brand’s typical signature. Whether you want to magnify a vinyl source via its phono input or diffuse a DSD512 stream, the MSA5500 stands out as a luxury solution, combining visual panache with total acoustic mastery.
What a joy to be able to launch your music via Qobuz Connect without having to go through yet another app! What’s more, what you hear is really impressive, as if the music were flowing without any intermediary. There are no mannerisms here, no unnecessary complexity: it takes up all the space and comes to life instantly. The sound of the MSA5500 is solid, yet communicative and organic. There’s air, substance, and punch—lots of it. This materialization of sound gives the music a sensuality and intensity that is above all the signature sound of McIntosh, reinforced here by total control of the sound from the streamer to the power stages, with no other intermediary in the signal path. If we add up all the features contained in this MSA5500 and compare this to the high-class performance it delivers for the music we feed it, the verdict is overwhelmingly positive.
