Nine years after Apple declared the end of the headphone jack, this iconic connector seems to be making a comeback. Smartphone manufacturers are reinstating this 3.5mm port in their models, responding to a growing demand for wired audio options. While this trend may seem backward, it is in fact the result of concrete user needs and technological developments.

Latency-free sound and image
When Apple did away with the headphone jack, other giants such as Samsung followed suit, banking on the rise of Bluetooth headphones and earbuds. One of the arguments put forward to justify this decision was the lack of space in modern designs and increased waterproofing. For Apple, it was also an opportunity to promote its Beats accessories, while Samsung, in addition to its own equipment, relied on the Harman, AKG and JBL brands.
However, smartphone manufacturers, particularly those specializing in gaming such as ASUS, were quick to recognize their users’ expectations. Indeed, for gamers, the absence of audio lag, perceptible with Bluetooth, remains essential. For music lovers, a wired connection is a must to ensure optimum sound quality and to take full advantage of high-resolution streaming services.

Although the majority of high-end phones continue to do without, other manufacturers such as Sony and TECNO are using this argument to stand out from the crowd. Some brands are going even further: Nubia has launched a model with two headphone connectors to facilitate audio sharing.
Gaming devices such as the Steam Deck OLED, MSI Claw, PlayStation Portal and the future Nintendo Switch 2, confirm this trend. The headphone jack remains essential for a sound experience without lag.
More eco-friendly listening
Younger generations are also playing a key role in the return of wired listening. Indeed, 87% of 18-29 year-olds use their phones to listen to streaming music. Practical and affordable, wired earbuds are making a comeback among the younger generation, recalling the craze for CDs, vinyl and film cameras.

The financial benefits also add to the appeal. With wireless models sometimes costing over €200, wired earphones costing just €20 are an attractive alternative. What’s more, wired connections are simple and reliable: there are no batteries to recharge or Bluetooth connection problems.

Finally, environmental considerations complete the picture. Conscious of the need for sustainable development, this new generation perceives wireless headphones and earphones as environmentally unfriendly due to their disposable batteries. This makes wired audio a practical and responsible choice.

Driven by gamers, audiophiles and the younger generation, this trend is all about practicality, style and durability. While some brands continue to favor wireless accessories, others are once again exploring the possibilities offered by wired audio. This choice, long considered obsolete, is now more relevant than ever.
