In particular, their DTS AutoStage Video Service platform, powered by TiVo, is revolutionizing in-car entertainment by integrating a user experience comparable to that of smart TVs. With the adoption of this technology by renowned car manufacturers such as BMW and Mini, Xperi promises a seamless and customizable transition from the living room to the car, offering users unprecedented access to a wide range of video and audio content. Stephane David, Xperi’s Director of Content Partnerships and Business Development, took part in a Q&A session to explain the work carried out by Xperi, and in particular the innovation brought about by the DTS AutoStage platform.

Stephane David, Head of Content Partnerships and Business Development, EMEA at Xperi

Could you explain what Xperi is? What are the advantages of Xperi-managed content in cars?

Xperi is a technology company that designs, develops and delivers technologies for unique entertainment experiences. Xperi technologies, with brands such as HD Radio, TiVo and DTS, are integrated into consumer devices and multimedia platforms worldwide, to enrich the entertainment experience, including on the dashboard screens of connected cars.

In the automotive sector, DTS AutoStage Video Service Powered by TiVo is an AI-powered entertainment platform. This platform enables advanced discovery of video content from a wide range of streaming services and apps, with top-quality sound and an intuitive user interface (comparable to smart TVs). Carmakers, including BMW and Mini, can therefore offer their customers a smooth, intuitive and customizable experience between the home and the car, while guaranteeing reliability, safety and performance.

Xperi is developing a video content platform, called DTS AutoStage Video Service, to be integrated into vehicle dashboards.

What challenges did you face in adapting DTS AutoStage Video to the French market?

TiVo is first and foremost a video platform in Europe and the United States for smart TVs and for telecom operator boxes. Our strategy is to extend our partnerships with streaming content apps from TVs to connected vehicles. One of the main challenges is to ensure a content catalog that combines local and international apps. In France, BMW and Mini users want access to their favorite services, such as TF1+, as well as international streaming and news. We also had to adapt our catalog to French linguistic and regulatory specificities, which were key elements in the development of our platform.

How does DTS AutoStage combine linear media and on-demand content?

DTS AutoStage transforms the in-car experience by bringing video, radio and audio together in an intuitive interface. The aim is to aggregate content from different sources to provide a seamless catalog. For example, a user can watch a TF1+ series while waiting for the kids at soccer practice, or listen to a TED conference, or a selection of news programs, while driving.

Can you describe the specific benefits that DTS AutoStage offers car manufacturers and users?

Today, the line between consuming entertainment at home or on the road is becoming blurred. The car’s interior is truly becoming a “third space” for relaxation, with screens and audio systems inviting content consumption. The evolution of these content consumption habits, as well as the rise of electric vehicles (with a recharge time of around 20 minutes), the multiplication of in-car screens, and in the future, self-driving vehicles, mean that the in-car experience is beginning to change completely.

DTS AutoStage enables car manufacturers to offer a high-end, customizable entertainment solution that truly enhances the in-car experience. It integrates easily with infotainment systems, offering a wide choice of content with outstanding audio and video quality. What’s really interesting is that automakers can maintain ownership of their own experience, with total control over their relationship with customers. For users, DTS AutoStage simplifies content discovery and delivers a personalized, immersive entertainment experience… while ensuring the driver’s attention stays on the road!

How do you personalize content for users?

DTS AutoStage uses machine-learning algorithms and detailed music and video metadata to analyze users’ preferences and viewing habits. For example, if someone often watches news content on the way to work, the platform will highlight similar recommendations for an experience more suited to their tastes and expectations.

In what way has your collaboration with TiVo helped enhance the DTS AutoStage video service?

TiVo is a brand that has been creating unique and personalized experiences around content discovery, search and recommendation for over 25 years. Its key role in DTS AutoStage is to power the content discovery and recommendation technology integrated into connected vehicles. The idea is to shorten the time it takes to access content, and the sometimes incessant scrolling through layers of content in app menus.

DTS AutoStage Video Service Powered by TiVo combines the DTS AutoStage platform, which is revolutionizing the in-car radio and streaming experience, with TiVo’s expertise in content discovery. The same advanced algorithms that help users find content on their Smart TVs are integrated into the vehicles, guaranteeing a smooth, intuitive and, above all, fast experience, enabling drivers and passengers to be entertained wherever they are.

Paramount+ video streaming further enhances the driver's digital experience.

We’re starting to see the emergence of in-vehicle audio systems that offer a three-dimensional experience. Are you planning to integrate Dolby Atmos and/or DTS:X content?

DTS is part of Xperi, so our in-car entertainment solutions naturally integrate DTS:X technology to deliver an immersive audio experience. For example, RIDEVU, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s in-car entertainment service, will begin offering IMAX Enhanced films from the Sony Pictures catalog directly in selected vehicles this year, starting with Mercedes-Benz models. IMAX Enhanced is the only way to experience IMAX’s signature image and sound outside the movie theater.
With RIDEVU, users will be able to enjoy a selection of IMAX Enhanced films, with IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio (EAR), IMAX DMR remastering technology and immersive DTS:X sound, available in several languages, of course.

What developments do you think the in-vehicle entertainment market will see in the next few years?

Content consumption and in-car entertainment will take on a whole new dimension, particularly with the rise of electric and self-driving vehicles, but also with the multiplication of screens in cars. Demand for compelling content will increase, and access to a growing number of in-car streaming apps makes the role of the interface increasingly critical in delivering the most relevant content to users at all times. The average time spent searching for content on our TVs is around 30 minutes a day (over 182 hours a year!). Nobody wants to spend that much time in their car looking for content!

At the same time, as screens and in-car audio systems continue to improve, we expect a wider adoption of personalized recommendation systems and multi-screen experiences for passengers, totally transforming the way we consume entertainment on the road.
