Yamaha has announced the compatibility of its AVENTAGE AV receivers with the Sonos ecosystem. Thanks to a free software update, four iconic models in the range can now be integrated into a Sonos system via a simple Sonos Port.

Works with Sonos: what does this actually mean?

Thanks to the Works with Sonos certification, AV receivers in the Yamaha Aventage range are now compatible with Sonos. This means that you can now control one of these AVRs from the Sonos app as if it were a classic Sonos speaker. This integration works via a Sonos Port, a small box that acts as a link between the Yamaha AVR and the world of the American brand. Once the connection is established, users can automatically switch on their Yamaha receiver, select the appropriate input, adjust the volume… without ever leaving the Sonos environment and all from the Sonos app. The AV receiver then acts as a source in the Sonos system, perfectly integrated with the rest of the multi-room network. Naturally, all MusicCast streaming and control functions remain available.

This Works with Sonos certification enables unified control, smooth management of different zones, and seamless transition between different rooms in the house. You can start a playlist in the living room, continue it in the kitchen, or synchronize the AV receiver with a Sonos Move speaker on the patio.

Thanks to Works with Sonos certification, Yamaha AVENTAGE AV receivers can be controlled directly from the Sonos app and join the American manufacturer’s multi-room ecosystem.

How to enjoy Sonos multi-room with Yamaha

For the moment, the software update applies to the four flagship AV receivers in the AVENTAGE range: the Yamaha RX-A2A, Yamaha RX-A4A, Yamaha RX-A6A and Yamaha RX-A8A. All these models now benefit from the “Works with Sonos” certification after a simple free firmware update, available today via the Yamaha MusicCast app or directly from the receiver when it is connected to the Internet. Here’s how it works:

  1. Update your AVR: via the receiver’s menu or the Yamaha MusicCast app.
  2. Connect a Sonos Port to the AVR’s analog or digital input.
  3. Configure the Port in the Sonos app and assign it to a “room”.
  4. Add this room to MusicCast so that the AVR knows which source to activate automatically.
  5. Control your AVR from the Sonos app: volume, start-up, source selection… Everything is automatic.

A winning strategy for Yamaha

In deciding to open up part of its system to Sonos, Yamaha has made a pragmatic and bold choice. Rather than locking its users into the MusicCast ecosystem, the Japanese brand has agreed to embrace a complementary approach. This is excellent news for users already equipped with Sonos, who can finally consider adding a home theater system without giving up their current ecosystem. For newcomers, it’s the assurance of a modular and future-proof solution.

This in no way detracts from the merits of MusicCast, which remains an excellent Hi-Res Audio-compatible ecosystem that opens the door to numerous streaming services. But by giving the user a choice, Yamaha has made an important strategic shift. Yamaha recognizes Sonos’ clout and would rather join forces with it than struggle alone. This approach is in line with the strategy adopted in recent years by a number of industry players, including Onkyo and Pioneer, who already offer a wide range of Sonos-compatible AV receivers.
