With the FiiO Snowsky Disc, the Chinese brand has undoubtedly created the cutest HD DAP currently available. It draws inspiration from portable CD players and Minidisc players in an ultra-compact design dominated by a circular touchscreen on top. Priced at under €100, it promises to make on-the-go listening more accessible, with a dual 32-bit/384 kHz DAC and DSD128, as well as amplification with a balanced 4.4mm jack and unbalanced 3.5mm mini-jack headphone outputs.
A player that evokes nostalgia
Vintage is timeless in hi-fi, and FiiO understands this perfectly. The FiiO Snowsky Disc audiophile DAP is fully in line with this approach. It skillfully taps into nostalgia by drawing on the iconic design elements of 2000s MP3 players, somewhere between the iPod nano and the MiniDisc. Its circular display, compact size, and minimalist design instantly evoke these now-iconic devices, which FiiO reimagines here with a particularly refined attention to detail.

It is part of a broader strategy launched several months ago by the manufacturer, which has been paying homage to icons of analog and digital audio. These include the Snowsky Echo Mini DAP, which reinterprets the aesthetics of Walkman-type cassette players, while the FiiO Warmer R2R DAC fully embraces its vintage inspiration with its VU meters and resistor conversion stage. In an even more radical vein, the FiiO CP13 player brings the analog cassette itself up to date, with its FiiO EH11 headphones reminiscent of the models of the era.
FiiO even takes the concept a step further, integrating cassette-playback simulators on some of its portable players that reproduce the imperfections of magnetic tape, both visually and in sound. With this approach, FiiO aims to restore meaning to the product by blending modern technology with classic design.
Modern audio architecture
Behind its retro styling, the FiiO Snowsky Disc player adopts a very modern architecture, with the integration of a dual Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC. Each channel benefits from its own DAC for Hi-Res music playback at up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD128. This dual DAC is combined with an Ingenic X2000 processor acting as a master controller to ensure correct data timing and limit jitter.

At the output of this conversion stage, the FiiO Snowsky Disc player integrates its own headphone amplifier. The latter can develop up to 125 mW into 32 ohms via its 3.5 mm headphone output, and 280 mW on its 4.4 mm mini-jack output, providing adequate power for sensitive headphones and most in-ear monitors. The FiiO Snowsky Disc DAP features a 10-band equalizer, directly accessible from the touchscreen, for perfect adaptation to the associated headphones or to the user’s preferences.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming
With no internal storage, the FiiO Snowsky Disc DAP opts for flexibility, relying on a microSD card reader for music playback. Compatible with storage capacities of up to 2 TB, it lets you take a particularly extensive music library with you. Its USB-C port also offers a dual function, allowing it to be used as a USB DAC with a computer or smartphone, for high-quality audio conversion on all your digital sources. Connected, it also boasts Wi-Fi compatibility, making it easy to receive audio streams via AirPlay from an iPhone, iPad or Mac. Finally, Bluetooth integration facilitates wireless listening, whether with headphones, earbuds or a wireless speaker.

With the Snowsky Disc, FiiO has created much more than just a portable music player: it’s a unique device that seamlessly blends nostalgia and modernity. Behind its irresistible design and gadget-like appearance lies a true audio source, designed to deliver a high-quality listening experience without sacrificing the pleasure of owning the device. Compact, accessible, and endearing, it promises to make the world of Hi-Res music players more accessible to everyone.
