Our expert’s opinion

The Direct Drive Cammus C12 steering wheel is a complete solution for discerning beginner drivers, who have been shunned by the big names in simracing. With its numerous customization options, direct-drive motor and software that makes it easy to configure the steering wheel for all simulator games, this all-in-one solution will suit all budding simracers. This steering wheel also improves on the C5, with wider paddle shifters that offer better ergonomics and enable drift enthusiasts to better control their vehicle. It keeps its promise of offering a great simulation experience at a reasonable budget.

The Cammus C12 simracing steering wheel features a 12 Nm Direct Drive.

A discreet but ambitious player in the simracing world for several years now, Cammus continues its rise to prominence with the C12 steering wheel, which aims to offer the features of a high-end model at a more accessible price. After the excellent C5, the Chinese manufacturer returns with this model capable of delivering up to 12 Nm of torque. A simple evolution or a real step up in the range?

Included accessories

In the same way as for our Cammus C5 test, the Cammus C12 steering wheel was mounted on a desk using the CS5 clamp and combined with the optional CP5 pedal board. Inside the box, you’ll find the Cammus C12 Direct Drive steering wheel, its 360-watt power supply, a USB-B to USB-A cable, two T-brackets for mounting on the clamp, and a fan for improved cooling. What’s more, this steering wheel offers a high degree of customization thanks to a panel of self-adhesive pictograms, so that it can be adapted to most simulation games. Last but not least, a start-up manual (in English and Chinese) makes it easy to get to grips with the steering wheel and PC software.

Presentation

Cammus’ approach to its Direct Drive steering wheels is very interesting for simulation enthusiasts. Like the C5, the C12 steering wheel is an all-in-one solution. Unlike some entry-level models, here we’re talking about a direct drive, offering greater reliability, and greater precision regarding vibration and force feedback. Despite a rather aggressive price tag under the €600 mark, the Cammus C12 steering wheel offers quality finishes and materials such as aluminum. The steering wheel, meanwhile, is covered in a pleasant leatherette. Like the manufacturer’s other accessories, the whole unit is sturdy and promises excellent longevity.

Mounted on a desk using the CS5 clamp, the installation offers great stability. However, as the Cammus C12 Direct Drive steering wheel is capable of a force of up to 12 Nm, a rigid and fairly heavy desk is recommended. Ideally, the C12 can be pushed be mounted on a simulation seat for the best experience. This steering wheel is clearly aimed at beginners, but also at aspiring simracers who want to take their simulation experience to the next level.

Ideal for car simulation video games, the Cammus C12 steering wheel is beautifully finished.
Affordable, the Direct Drive Cammus C12 offers a fine finish and performance worthy of high-end models.

Our impressions

Realistic driving sensations

The Direct Drive Cammus C12 showed its potential right from the start. The force feedback was very impressive and the vibrations offered more detail than with the C5. The difference lies not only in the 12 Nm of force, but also in the increased precision that gives the driver more information. By default, the force feedback is quite rough, with noticeable cogging, partly due to the friction setting being too high. Adjusting the settings in the software options is essential to achieve a better result.

🚗 Expert's note
Cogging refers to a jerky feel with the steering wheel, especially at low speeds or during slow movements. This manifests itself as slight resistance, due to the internal structure of the motor and the alignment of its magnets.

One of the C5’s main problems has been corrected on the Cammus C12 steering wheel, with larger paddle shifters offering improved ergonomics. As a result, drifters can enjoy smoother gear changes, whatever the angle of the steering wheel. However, additional clutch paddles would have been welcome, but with the CP5 pedalboard, this little shortcoming is quickly forgotten.

With its large paddle shifters, the Cammus C12 Direct Drive steering wheel is ideal for drifting.
With its larger paddle shifters, the Cammus C12 Direct Drive steering wheel offers improved ergonomics and allows drifting without constraint.

The 21 programmable inputs remain accessible, without being particularly ergonomic. The buttons are adaptable to most simulation games and can be customized. No revolution here, but the Direct Drive Cammus C12 steering wheel allows you to play most titles compatible with simracing steering wheels. The two rotary encoders are also somewhat lacking in responsiveness, suggesting that more attention could have been paid to their design.

While the C5 model didn’t heat up much, the Cammus C12’s power demands the use of the supplied fan. During long gaming sessions, the constant air flow really helps cooling. We strongly recommend installing it on the desk or cockpit.

The 300mm wheel

The leatherette covering the steering wheel is pleasant. If the quality isn’t up to the level of a high-end steering wheel, it will suit most drivers perfectly. We also regret the rather pronounced stitching which, although it doesn’t spoil the experience, may indeed displease the most advanced simracers.

All-in-one also means the absence of a Quick Release to quickly detach the wheel. The wheel is fastened with screws, spaced 6 x 70 mm apart. It is therefore possible to replace the steering wheel, but you will need tools to remove it. This is a definite advantage over the C5, which doesn’t offer this option. As a result, the Cammus C12 Direct Drive steering wheel is partially upgradeable.

Integrated display

One of the highlights of the Cammus C12 steering wheel is its 3-digit display which, depending on the game, shows the car’s speed or gear. A valuable indication that also enhances immersion. Thanks to the software, configuration is very easy, as a list of compatible games lets you configure the steering wheel in just a few clicks. All popular titles are included, making set-up a breeze.

As mentioned in our Cammus C5 review, the software still has some flaws. The display is not always functional on certain games. No doubt it will evolve with each update and improve over time. As it stands, it allows you to modify most of the steering wheel options and configure the buttons, offering a high degree of personalization.

A steering wheel that keeps its promise

The Direct Drive Cammus C12 steering wheel is positioned in a segment neglected by the big names in simracing. By offering an all-in-one steering wheel incorporating top-of-the-range technologies, the Asian manufacturer has created a unique offering that may be of interest to novice drivers, while bringing a certain level of sophistication that can’t usually be found on entry-level models.

In short, drivers who want to get started in sim racing without the drawbacks of a beginner’s model will find the Cammus C12 steering wheel to be a smart choice. It offers many features that are only found on high-end steering wheels, while compromising on certain finishing details. Cammus makes no false promises and offers a great sim racing experience on a budget.

Cammus C12 compared to the Moza Racing R12

Cammus stands alone in this market segment. Opposite it is Moza Racing, which offers the Direct Drive R12 base, to which a steering wheel must be added. In this case, the budget can quickly skyrocket. However, the price is justified by a Quick Release attachment system and a comprehensive, modular ecosystem. It’s hard to compare the Cammus C12 all-in-one steering wheel, given the uniqueness of its approach, which is aimed at players who have been forgotten by other manufacturers.

For a more premium configuration, the Direct Drive Moza Racing R12 base and steering wheel are ideal for experienced simracers.
