HiFiMAN HE-1000 V4 Stealth Magnet hi-fi headphones

- Open-back, over-ear design
- Planar Magnetic transducers with nanometre-scale diaphragms
- Stealth Magnets magnetic technology
- Frequency response from 8 Hz to 65 kHz
- 32 ohm impedance and 93 dB sensitivity
- Detachable cables with 6.35 mm jack and 4-pin XLR connectors
- Price: €959
A sound that I find quite neutral, detailed, and balanced. No tonal colouration, with plenty of detail in the bass (which is well-defined, tight, precise, and extends down to the sub-bass (8 Hz), the mids, and the high frequencies. I use it with a powerful headphone amplifier (over 6 W per channel) that’s also renowned for its highly accurate DAC (Topping DX5 II). The combination delivers extraordinary dynamics, with no noise (135 dB S/N!) > […] The headband is well-designed and makes you forget how heavy the headphones are. The headphones are on the larger side, so the ear pads wrap around the ears without touching them. Again, this makes them ideal for long listening sessions without causing fatigue or getting too warm. I listen to quite a few different music genres (hard rock, blues, funk, electronic (like Yello), movie soundtracks…). These headphones work well for all of them.

FiiO M33 R2R DAP

- Passive R2R DAC with 192 resistors
- Compatible with 32-bit/768 kHz PCM and DSD512
- Balanced amplification up to 1,100 mW
- 4.4 mm and 3.5 mm headphone jacks
- Android 13 with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LDAC, and streaming
- Desktop mode with dedicated USB-C power supply
- Up to 14 hours of battery life
- Price: €699
This FiiO was a wonderful surprise! It’s easy to get to grips with and simple to set up once configured. This player delivers a beautiful, smooth, natural sound (with the Focal Clear MG). I don’t use the equaliser, but there are plenty of settings (maybe too many?). No issues at all with streaming on Deezer; the only minor drawback is the poorly placed volume button—otherwise, everything is perfect! A big thank you to the customer service team at Son-Vidéo.com for their responsiveness and professionalism regarding my dispute with GLS!

Xgimi Mira Laser Ultra HD 4K UST projector

- Triple RGB laser DLP technology
- Ultra HD 4K resolution
- 2,000 ISO lumens
- Compatible with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HLG
- ISA 5.0 smart setup
- 1080p gaming at 240 Hz with VRR and 1 ms latency
- 36 W Harman Kardon audio system
- Price: €1,439
This is my first projector, and I’m not disappointed. I use it with an ALR UST screen, and the results are great. In “Film” mode, the colours are really natural and easy on the eyes, though you do lose a bit of perceived brightness. This is in contrast to “Standard” mode, which has higher brightness but much more vibrant colours. The picture is more flattering in that mode but clearly less easy on the eyes in complete darkness. The Harman Kardon sound is really good—clearly superior to a TV’s without being overly showy. Just the right amount of bass and clarity for dialogue.

LG UltraGear 27GS60QC-B gaming monitor

- 27-inch 1000R curved VA panel
- QHD resolution: 2560 × 1440 pixels
- 180 Hz refresh rate
- 1 ms response time (GtG)
- Compatible with AMD FreeSync and VESA AdaptiveSync
- HDR10 and 99% sRGB coverage
- Price: €179
It’s still better than Samsung’s Odyssey range, which has a thermistor issue that causes the screen to go black intermittently. Fingers crossed, as it’s really good.

TCL 85C9K QD-Mini LED TV

- 85-inch Ultra HD 4K display
- QD-Mini LED backlighting with 5,184 zones
- Maximum brightness of 6,500 nits
- Native refresh rate of 144 Hz
- Compatible with Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+, and IMAX Enhanced
- Bang & Olufsen audio system compatible with Dolby Atmos
- Price: €1,990
I was torn between this technology and OLED, but I don’t regret my choice. TCL’s QD-Mini LED technology with micro-zone backlighting achieves the same level of black as OLED to the naked eye, whilst eliminating the drawbacks of OLED. No pixel burn-in issues, an incredibly bright display, and, as a result, the most stunning HDR 10+ I’ve ever seen thanks to a peak brightness of 10,000 nits. I recommend it 100%—and the bigger it is, the better.

Rotel Michi X3 Series 2 hi-fi amplifier

- 2 × 200 W class AB amplification into 8 ohms
- ESS Sabre ES9028PRO DAC
- PCM compatible up to 32-bit/384 kHz
- Built-in MM phono input
- Bluetooth aptX HD and AAC
- Balanced XLR and RCA analogue inputs
- Price: €6,990
After a meticulous comparison, this one will stay, and the Hegel H400 will go. Both are excellent, but the connectivity, tone control, and other features mean that the Michi comes out on top. In terms of sound, the differences are ultimately much more subtle than I would have thought—and than what I’d read in the specs. It’s a touch less sparkling in the highs, but the bass is just as controlled. The remote control is also slimmer, more stylish, and more modern.

Sonoro Vibes XL portable Bluetooth speaker

- 360° sound with 5 drivers
- Four 3″ full-range drivers and one 8″ woofer
- Bluetooth 5.4 with aptX HD and LE Audio
- Auracast compatible
- Up to 16 hours of battery life
- IPX4 splash-resistant certification
- Price: €999
Two Vibes XLs allow me to enjoy very high-quality sound without turning the volume up too high (I have neighbours living close by). They can also be used for a party over a large area, whilst still delivering excellent sound. It’s undoubtedly the best outdoor sound system I’ve ever heard. There’s no stereo, which is a bit of a let-down for quiet listening, and the volume control across the two speakers could do with some improvement (you often need to adjust them both individually, and sometimes the opposite). Nevertheless, I’d recommend it to anyone who can afford it, and I’d recommend two speakers (even standard-sized ones), as the volume they produce is impressive. They sound excellent across the entire frequency range when used outdoors (I haven’t tested them indoors).

FiiO DM15 R2R CD player

- CD player, DAC and portable headphone amplifier
- Balanced R2R DAC with 192 resistors
- 32-bit/384 kHz PCM and DSD256 compatible
- Headphone amplification up to 1150 mW into 32 ohms
- Bluetooth 5.4 aptX HD / aptX Adaptive
- Price: €269
After my first experience with FiiO using an M21, I wanted a CD player/ripper to expand my music library without necessarily having to use a streaming platform. The ripping feature only works with a FAT32-formatted USB drive. I’ll set that up soon. As for the design, it’s true that the buttons require a light touch. That said, having used Sony Discman players and others, I can’t help but be impressed by the quality of this player: a rock-solid DSP, a pronounced yet precise equaliser and bass boost, and a dynamic unbalanced output (tested with old Focal Listen headphones that are still in great shape). On the other hand, the difference between this and the balanced output isn’t just a gap—it’s a chasm! The dynamic range is enough to make your eardrums bleed. Fortunately, I tried this one with an Audivina Le from HiFiMAN, which requires a bit more power. But the R2R conversion is very noticeable—and I don’t mind that at all. It’s a throwback to the ’90s with youthful dynamics—a winning combination to enjoy without moderation.
