Escape P9: presentation

The Escape P9 speaker features a chassis that combines aluminum for the handle that extends down two edges of the speaker and synthetic materials with a rubber-like coating on top. The four sides are covered by an acoustic fabric that lets sound pass through but does not let the drivers show. As this speaker adopts a bass-reflex enclosure with a downward-firing port, it is equipped with four feet with non-slip pads.

The high-quality finish and materials immediately inspire confidence, a feeling that is reinforced by the speaker’s substantial weight, which confirms that this is not a toy or a cheap audio gadget.

Although primarily intended for outdoor use, the Escape P9 is also effective for playing music in a large living space.

The Escape P9 is quite imposing with its height of 73cm and width of 22cm, and weighs just over 12kg. Its size makes it ideal for playing music in large rooms and for providing sound on a large terrace, in a garden or a patio outdoors when the weather is nice.

At 73cm tall and 22cm wide, the Escape P9 Bluetooth speaker does not go unnoticed, indoors and out.

Waterproof and robust

With its large handle, the Escape P9 Bluetooth speaker is easily transported from room to room in the house, onto the patio or into the garden.

The Escape P9 speaker is topped with a sturdy handle that provides a secure grip.

Its rugged chassis is designed to withstand splashes, in accordance with the IPX4 certification. The Escape P9 portable speaker is therefore safe to use in a bathroom, by the pool or at the beach and can even withstand a rain shower.

Omnidirectional sound

Designed to deliver rich, energetic, powerful sound in all directions, the Escape P9 features four 3” full-range drivers (one on each side) with a polypropylene cone that has a wide excursion. These drivers are equipped with a powerful magnetic system for a lively and intense sound. They are also equipped with a ventilated voice coil to limit distortion. The Escape P9 Bluetooth speaker has a genuine 7.8” diameter woofer that features a reinforced fiberglass basket and an oversized magnet to deliver powerful bass. It is loaded in a significant amount of air in a bass-reflex enclosure, with a port under the speaker.

The Escape P9 speaker’s bass-reflex port is downward-firing. A metal anti-theft fixing bar can be found in the port, allowing the speaker to be secured if necessary.

Its five drivers are powered by a powerful 100 watt RMS digital amplifier.

Bluetooth aptX

The Escape P9 portable speaker features a built-in Bluetooth controller that allows it to easily stream music played by a smartphone, tablet or DAP. Support for Bluetooth SBC, AAC and aptX codecs is provided, ensuring compatibility with any Android or Apple device, with optimal aptX audio quality that is almost equivalent to audio CD quality.

Mini-jack input and USB audio port

The Escape P9’s mini-jack input is situated under a cover at the left end of the control panel.

In addition to Bluetooth, the Escape P9 portable speaker has a 3.5mm mini-jack input that lets you connect a DAP, CD player, TV or any other wired source with a stereo analog output. It is located under a small protective cover at the left end of the control panel on top of the speaker. A mini-jack to mini-jack cable is included.

At the other end of the control panel is a USB audio port to play MP3, WMA and FLAC digital audio files stored on a USB flash drive.

The Escape P9 speaker also has a powered USB port and a second mini-jack input under its keyboard, in a waterproof compartment, to accommodate a future audio receiver according to the manufacturer. This compartment is approximately 4.5cm wide, 11.5cm long and 4cm high.

We were able to connect a Chromecast audio, its USB power cable and the mini-jack cable provided by the manufacturer and put back the control panel without difficulty once the Chromecast was connected. With this configuration, we were able to cast Hi-Res audio tracks from Qobuz up to 24-bit/96kHz to the speaker. This solution also allows you to enjoy a stronger connection with a much greater range, so you can install the speaker more than 20 or even 30 meters away from the house without losing the signal. The only drawback is that with the Chromecast audio, the speaker’s control panel no longer allows you to pause playback or change tracks like you can when using Bluetooth. You can only control the volume. Consequently, you’ll have to keep your smartphone handy.

Control interface and app

The Escape P9 speaker has a comprehensive and user-friendly control interface on the top panel, just below the handle. It allows you to select the source, start playback, pause playback, adjust the volume and change tracks.

The Escape P9’s control interface allows you to turn the speaker on and off, control the main audio playback functions (play/pause, next/previous track, volume up/down) and perform Bluetooth pairing.

You can also control the Escape P9 speaker via the application of the same name that can be downloaded from the Play Store or the App Store. It allows you to play music but also to customize the sound of the Escape P9. The manufacturer offers 3 presets (standard, indoor and outdoor) to optimize the musicality of the speaker according to its use, but also custom settings with a 5-band graphic equalizer to adjust the sound according to your preferences.

Lastly, it is possible to pair two Escape P9 speakers to enjoy a genuine stereo sound, with one speaker for the right channel and another for the left.

8 hour battery life

In theory, the battery offers up to 8 hours of autonomy and is even more generous if the volume is set to a reasonable level. This speaker will therefore be able to accompany you throughout the day to play music continuously. Recharging takes less than 3 hours.

The Escape P9’s battery can also be removed and replaced with a new one after several years of use to give the speaker a new lease of life.

Escape P9: listening conditions

We listened to this speaker in our living room of about 40m², in our garden and on the terrace, in Bluetooth aptX via the Qobuz application from a smartphone, but also by using a Chromecast audio module. Housed in the compartment under the control interface of the speaker, the Chromecast was connected to the Internet router via WiFi to stream our playlists in Hi-Res (24/96) from Qobuz, with better sound quality and a greater range than in Bluetooth.

We also made use of the Escape P9’s mini-jack input and USB port. We connected our smartphone to the first using the mini-jack cable provided by the manufacturer, and we connected a USB stick containing MP3 and FLAC (16/44.1) audio files to the second.

Escape P9: listening impressions

The Escape P9 speaker has a lot under its belt and its 100 watts of power aren’t just for show. The 7.8” driver expressed itself with great energy and the music unfolded generously.

The different equalization profiles proved to be very useful to adapt the sound of the speaker.

  • Standard: balanced sound with a nice clarity and expressive bass, ideal for indoors.
  • Indoor: sound that is somewhat muffled with a compression of the dynamic range. Suitable for late night listening sessions so as not to wake up people sleeping or in an apartment so as not to disturb the neighbors. Globally, we were dissatisfied by this profile.
  • Outdoor: a wider dynamic range, great clarity throughout the mids and highs, substantial and very energetic bass.
  • Custom: lets you adjust the level from -9 dB to +6 dB across 5 frequency bands (60Hz, 230Hz, 910Hz, 3kHz et 14kHz) to customize the sound to suit your taste.

Two sound modes are available for each profile:

  • Direct: sound that is relatively centered around the speaker, less full but more balanced, very expressive low frequency range.
  • Wide: wider sound fields, slight loss of level in the lows, accentuation of the highs and upper midrange.

Escape P9: compared to…

JBL PartyBox 1000

With the same price tag as the Escape P9, the JBL PartyBox 1000 has a slightly different configuration. It has a compression driver for the high frequencies and two midrange drivers, all mounted on the front, accompanied by an 11.8” downward-firing woofer. Its amplification delivers a total power of 1100 watts! However, it needs to be connected to the mains to operate as it does not have a battery.

In practice, the JBL speaker is capable of offering a much more powerful sound, ideal for a big party. It also gets lower in the bass with more authority. Finally, its integrated wheels, its light effects and its microphone and guitar inputs are additional advantages. The JBL PartyBox 1000 has the edge with its more festive and transportable aspects.

In contrast to this profusion of power and lighting effects, the Escape P9 offers a more balanced sound, with bass that is present but less emphasized. Above all, it offers a 360° sound diffusion and the possibility to more freely enjoy the music as it integrates a rechargeable battery. The Escape P9’s advantages are acoustic balance, omnidirectional diffusion and practicality.

Soundcast VG7 SE

The Soundcast VG7 SE has a similar configuration with 4 full-range drivers (one per side) and a woofer. More compact (48cm x 28cm) and a little lighter (9.5kg), it delivers a sound that is just as energetic and lively as that of the P9 thanks to its 120 watt amplification. Functions and connectivity are similar on both speakers, but the Soundcast has a much higher price tag (€1,499). The Escape P9 comes out on top thanks to its overall qualities and its value for money.

Escape P9: who is it for?

If you’re looking for a practical, easy-to-use speaker to liven up your barbecues and get your guests dancing on the patio or around your pool, the Escape P9 is for you. Your kids can also use it to party in the garage and sing their playlists at the top of their lungs!

More generally, the Escape P9 is for anyone looking for a powerful Bluetooth speaker capable of playing music very effectively in a large room in the house, but also on the terrace, in the garden or at your vacation destination.

Escape P9: conclusion

Elegant, robust and weatherproof, the Escape P9 Bluetooth speaker is designed to be used both indoors and outdoors and will complement any living room or garden decor. Its generous battery life of at least 8 hours ensures long listening sessions. You can take it with you for the whole day and it won’t let you down.

Its powerful 100-watt amplification gives it a great ability to punch out the beat and get the crowd dancing by projecting the sound in all directions. The Wide mode, available with all EQ profiles, further enhances the sense of immersion with a noticeably larger sound bubble around the speaker.

Some may find the Escape P9 a little too heavy and cumbersome, especially if you’re taking it to a friend’s house or on vacation, in which case it’ll take up a lot of room in the trunk. But it is the necessary trade-off to obtain substantial volume and impressive bass. Note that the manufacturer offers a dedicated rigid transport case with wheels and a telescopic handle (€99, sold separately).

The price of the Escape P9 is certainly a bit high, but it is justified by the build quality and the level of finish, as well as the sound performance, which is far superior to what more compact portable Bluetooth speakers can offer.

We liked

  • The great design
  • The energetic and powerful sound
  • The battery life

We would have liked

  • A more affordable price
  • A more compact format
