Romanian manufacturer Meze Audio has established itself in a few years as one of the biggest headphone specialists. It all started in 2015 with the Meze 99 Classics closed-back headphones, which quickly accumulated awards and prizes, both for their design and musicality. The brand took another step forward with the very high-end open-back Meze Empyrean model, followed by the Meze Empyrean Elite and more recently the Meze Liric portable headphones. A heritage that is embodied in the new Meze 109 Pro. They use certain design elements of the iconic Meze 99 Classics in an open design inspired by the brand’s high-end models. All this at a much lower price than the manufacturer’s other open-back models!
Meze 109 Pro: luxurious design
The analogy between the Meze 99 Classics and Meze 109 Pro is obvious. The two models share many similarities while each retaining their own identity. The walnut shells of the 99 Classics are carried over to the Meze 109 Pro, but are now combined with a spider-like structure coupled with an acoustically transparent grille to let the transducers breathe. An open structure that expands the stereo image and offers an even more effective separation of the different sound levels.
The charm of the Meze 109 Pro headphones is expressed through the quality of the selected materials. Their wooden shells are combined with a zinc structure, as well as a manganese steel alloy headband to combine robustness, elegance and lightness. These different elements are assembled using a system of screws. Each part can be disassembled, repaired and replaced, if necessary. An excellent aspect that ensures a very long life for these headphones.
Meze 109 Pro: new transducers
The Meze 109 Pro headphones are the first of the brand’s models to implement dynamic drivers in an open-back design. Newly developed for the Meze 109 Pro headphones, these transducers use a dual structure diaphragm. In its center is a W-shaped dome made of cellulose and carbon fibers. The brand promises incredible definition in the high frequencies thanks to this alloy that is much stronger and lighter than conventional alternatives. The second part of the membrane that surrounds the dome is made of a beryllium-coated semi-crystalline polymer. This material, already found on high-end headphones such as the prestigious Focal Utopia 2022 and Focal Stellia, improves the transient response. The high damping qualities of beryllium also help suppress unwanted resonance, giving the Meze 109 Pro headphones a neutral, crisp, transparent character.
The Meze 109 Pro headphones feature copper-zinc alloy drivers supported by an aluminum chassis. They are slightly tilted and offset from the ear to improve spatialization and the perception of different frequencies. Thanks to this design, Meze Audio promises a dynamic, precise and very neutral reproduction from 5Hz to 30kHz.
Meze 109 Pro: comfort of use
Like the Meze 99 Classics and Meze 99 Neo, the Meze 109 Pro headphones have a self-adjusting headband to perfectly fit all body types. This wide headband also ensures a good weight distribution across the listener’s head to maximize comfort. This is also due to the copiously padded earpads. They are covered with velvet to let your ears breathe and prevent them from overheating.
Meze 109 Pro: two detachable cables
With their very high sensitivity of 112 dB for an impedance of 40 ohms, the Meze 109 Pro headphones can be easily combined with any source, even of modest power. For this, they come with two detachable cables. They have a dual 3.5mm mono mini-jack connector on the earcup side and a 3.5mm mini-jack plug on the other end. The first cable is 1.5m long, which makes it ideal for connecting a DAP or headphone amp. The second one is 3m long to make it easy to connect the headphones to a headphone amp that is further away. A 3.5mm to 6.35mm jack adapter is also included. It is also possible to connect these headphones in balanced mode by opting for the optional Meze jack 4.4mm or Meze jack 2.5mm cables.
The new Meze 109 Pro headphones are now available for €799. Therefore, they are positionned in between the Meze 99 Classics and the high-end Meze Empyrean and Meze Empyrean Elite models. A very promising device that we will be testing soon. While you’re waiting, you can discover the other Meze headphones through the following reviews:
