The genesis of an iconic album
In 2008, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo began work on their fourth album. After several electronic demos based on samples and loops, they decided to depart from their usual methods. Their new goal: a more organic album, played by real musicians.
Among the first to join them was Nile Rodgers, Chic’s legendary guitarist. They were followed by Pharrell Williams, Chilly Gonzales, Panda Bear, Julian Casablancas, Todd Edwards, Paul Williams, and electronica pioneer Giorgio Moroder. Between 2008 and 2012, the duo recorded this disco-funk album in the utmost secrecy in Paris, New York, and Los Angeles.
The hit single, “Get Lucky”, began as a demo on a Wurlitzer before being brought to life by Rodgers’ guitar. Pharrell, a perfectionist, recorded multiple takes until he achieved the final result. In March 2013, a short excerpt was broadcast on American television, followed by a teaser at Coachella festival. Avoiding large-scale promotion, Daft Punk chose targeted communication to create a buzz.
Released on May 17, 2013, Random Access Memories was an instant hit, topping the charts in more than twenty countries. The following year, it won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, a testament to the French duo’s bold vision.
