Vinyl equipment specialist Technics is taking advantage of the 2023 back-to-school season to unveil a new record player. The silver Technics SL-1200GR2 and black Technics SL-1210GR2 references are a single direct-drive model. This fourth generation, which follows on from the acclaimed Technics SL-1200GR (rated 5 stars by users on Son-Vidéo.com), benefits from a redesign of the direct-drive motor. This innovation brings with it the promise of further limiting vibrations caused by irregular engine movement.

Technics SL-1200GR2: the secret of JENO technology
Aficionados of the Japanese manufacturer have been hoping for this since 2017. Technics has just announced its new turntable, the Technics SL-1200GR2. If we’ve had to wait so long, it’s probably because the brand’s engineers have had a lot to think about. This is what Frank Balzuweit, Product Manager at Technics Europe, explained: “We looked at how we have improved signal precision in our digital audio components, especially at the reference amplifier SU-R1000, which optimises vinyl analogue signals using complex digital technology”.

Technics’ goal is to take its direct-drive technology to the next level in terms of precision. “This was achievable by reducing motor vibration through optimising the driving sine waves,” reveals Frank Balzuweit. This is actually a principle that has already been used on the brand’s all-digital amplifiers.
Technics uses delta-sigma modulation, a 1-bit digital-to-analog conversion method made possible by JENO (Jitter Elimination and Noise-shaping Optimization) technology. This reduces motor vibrations and improves platter rotation precision on Technics SL-1200GR2 and Technics SL-12100GR2 turntables.
Technics SL-1200GR2: a new power supply
Thanks to a more linear rotation, the new Technics turntables eliminate the irregularities present in direct-drive motors, which interfere with the sound. The Japanese company has also developed a new power supply for its Technics SL-1200GR2 and SL-1210GR2 turntables. Quieter, it benefits from a multi-stage assembly and the anti-noise circuit inherited from the top-of-the-range Technics SL-1000R turntable.
Confident, Technics describes its power supply as “quieter than any other analog power supply”. It reduces background noise to deliver higher-quality sound that perfectly reveals every detail of the recordings.

Technics promises to push the boundaries of direct-drive turntables. The brand has even indicated its intention to apply these new technologies to future models. Meanwhile, the Technics SL-1200GR2 and Technics 1210GR2 turntables will be available in October 2023 at around €2,000.
