Dolby Vision is an HDR standard developed by Dolby Laboratories to provide dynamic enhancement of contrast and colorimetry. This technology uses a wider color space and brightness range than SDR. On Dolby Vision-compatible televisions, the image quality is superior, providing deeper and more nuanced blacks as well as brighter whites. The Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles support this standard, and it is already possible to benefit from it with many video games.

Dolby Vision is available on the Xbox Series S and X.
With images that accurately reproduce the artists’ vision, Dolby Vision is one of the Xbox Series X’s advantages.

What benefits does Dolby Vision offer?

Dolby Vision technology goes further than HDR10, offering 12-bit quantization. A technical choice imposed on 4K UHD TV manufacturers by Dolby to ensure compatibility with the standard. Like HDR10+, Dolby Vision is dynamic and uses metadata to ensure perfect screen adjustment to video content. The TV adapts in real time to the video game, offering deeper blacks in dark scenes and more brightness in daylight scenes, for example.

How to activate Dolby Vision on the Xbox Series S|X

Only available on the Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X, it is very easy to set up. If your TV is compatible with the standard, the console should be able to display games using Dolby Vision. With certain models, however, the console may indicate a compatibility issue. To solve this, you must deactivate AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync.

Microsoft recommends activating ALLM for a more responsive experience. To do this, go into the “General” settings, then into “TV and display” and select “Dolby Vision for gaming”. Note that your TV and console must be up to date for everything to work correctly. Some manufacturers have added this feature via new firmware.

Grand Theft Auto V features Dolby Vision
The backgrounds of Grand Theft Auto V are enhanced by Dolby Vision. The picture is brighter and offers a richer color palette and better contrast.

Many certified televisions cannot exceed 60Hz in Dolby Vision. However, Sony has recently unveiled the XR-55A95L, XR-65A95L and XR-77A95L models, which all support the standard up to 120Hz, aided by the new MediaTek Pentonic 1000 processor.

Which video games are compatible with Dolby Vision?

There are already many video games that support Dolby Vision, and the list is growing by the day. The main attraction for developers lies in the fact that this standard offers a perfect reproduction of the artists’ vision. The entire process is controlled from start to finish, and the image created by the studio is the same as the one you get at home. That’s why you can try your hand at these titles:

Like Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision is coming to the video game sector to provide gamers with the best possible visual experience. This technology is being adopted by studios and gamers who want to enjoy the picture as it was imagined by the artists. Currently unavailable for the PlayStation 5, we hope that this standard will soon be added to Sony’s console. Especially since Dolby Laboratories already offers its Unreal Engine plug-ins to developers, who can now integrate Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos into their games.
