Announced for February 2024, the Apple Vision Pro could well be the preferred solution for enjoying 3D films. It’s a technology that has been abandoned by all TV manufacturers, but has been given a new lease of life with Apple’s mixed-reality headset. Today, only older-generation projectors and TVs with a Blu-ray source can deliver this image format.

150 3D movies on the Apple Vision Pro
Disney+ recently confirmed that 3D movies will be available on the Apple Vision Pro headset. Some feature films will feature HFR (High Frame Rate), for a smoother picture, as was the case with Avatar: The Way of the Water, in which some scenes were shot at 48 frames per second (compared with the usual 24). On the technical side, 3D films are encoded in MV-HEVC (Multiview High Efficiency Video Coding), with 4K definition and HDR images in Dolby Vision.
The Disney+ SVOD service won’t be the only one to accompany the release of the Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset, as Apple TV+, ESPN, Max, Prime Video, Paramount+, Crunchyroll, Pluto TV and TikTok will also be available. Apple’s ambition is clear: the Vision Pro is designed to replace all screens, for both work and entertainment.
A virtual cinema at home
Beyond the already comprehensive offer, the contribution of mixed reality could well revolutionize habits. The Apple Vision Pro lets you enjoy a virtual desktop with a virtually unlimited number of windows. It’s also possible to display a giant TV in any room of the house or, even better, immerse yourself in a virtual movie theater.
The Disney+ Theater offers a wide range of movie-themed environments. It’s possible to watch a feature film from the Scare Floor of Monsters & Co, the Avengers tower, or Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder. The Apple Vision Pro will allow you to watch Star Wars on Tatooine, a real treat for fans of Lucas’ franchise!
A mixed-reality headset to replace all screens?
Virtual reality has come a long way in recent years. Whether it’s the impressive Sony PS VR 2 headset or the excellent HTC Vive Pro 2, the technology has now matured and offers flawless VR experiences. However, the advantage of mixed reality is its openness to the outside world. You can enjoy virtual elements while keeping an eye on your surroundings.

The Apple Vision Pro mixed-reality headset offers the best of both worlds. It enables complete immersion in virtual reality, as well as use in augmented reality, with a view of the outside environment. With a price announced at $3,500, Apple is targeting a very premium clientele and a niche market. However, the Apple brand could encourage other manufacturers to enter the race.
