An iconic figure in French high-fidelity since the 1980s, Micromega is making a big comeback with the new Micromega M-Amp Solo stereo amplifier. Entirely designed and manufactured in France, this model revives the spirit of the brand’s iconic electronics from the 1990s through a refined neo-retro design, enhanced by its Plexiglas front panel. Behind this heritage-rich aesthetic lies a resolutely modern design combining 2 x 85-watt Class A/B amplification at 8 ohms, a linear power supply with a toroidal transformer, a latest-generation ESS DAC, and a version with a network streamer.

A legendary French hi-fi brand

Founded more than 40 years ago, Micromega is one of the brands that have left their mark on the history of French hi-fi, thanks to electronics renowned for their musicality and cutting-edge technology. As early as the 1990s, the brand made a name for itself among music lovers with compact and innovative devices, including the famous Solo H2 CD player launched in 1994, to which the new Micromega M-Amp Solo pays homage. With its minimalist square design and transparent Plexiglas cover, this player quickly became one of the most iconic models in French hi-fi.

Over the years, Micromega has continued this pursuit of innovation with products such as the My series and the M-One M100 and M150, launched in 2016, which enjoyed significant success and even won an EISA award. But like many long-standing players in the European hi-fi industry, Micromega then went through a more challenging period. The brand faced a number of difficulties before being acquired in 2021 by La Boite Concept, another French company known for its designer audio solutions and acoustic expertise. It is with this new French-led momentum that Micromega is now embarking on its renaissance with the M-Amp Solo.

For over 40 years, Micromega has been one of the leading names in French hi-fi. With its groundbreaking innovations, iconic design, and electronics praised for their musicality, the brand is making a comeback today with the M-Amp Solo, a modern successor to the design of the brand’s legendary CD players from the 1990s.

A 100% French design

The acquisition by La Boite Concept marks the beginning of a new strategy aimed at preserving Micromega’s historic DNA while reviving high-end French manufacturing. Electronic design, software development, product design, and final assembly are all carried out entirely in France, divided between the brand’s Paris offices and La Manufacture du Son, located in Hossegor in the Landes region. Micromega prides itself on an artisanal approach, featuring manual assembly and individual quality checks on every unit.

Designed, assembled, and tested in France, the Micromega M-Amp Solo amplifier carries on a tradition of artisanal craftsmanship, with special attention paid to every stage of manufacturing and fine-tuning.

The Micromega M-Amp Solo amplifier clearly draws on its heritage from the 1994 Solo Plexi. It features the same 35 x 35 cm square format, minimalist lines, and subtly rounded corners that made the original model such an aesthetic success. The Plexi version even retains the famous transparent cover, immediately reinforcing its neo-retro identity. The Classic version takes a more understated approach with a solid aluminum cover. Micromega even takes its attention to detail a step further by offering an elegant magnetic remote control that can be attached directly to the side of the chassis when not in use. Both models are also available in a Streamer version with an Escape M1 Air module that attaches directly to the back of the unit, enabling network streaming.

With its aluminum chassis topped by an elegant Plexiglas top panel, the Micromega M-Amp Solo Plexi offers a modern reinterpretation of the brand’s iconic, historic models.

An architecture that remains true to Micromega’s DNA

Beneath its vintage design, the Micromega M-Amp Solo amplifier remains true to the brand’s long-standing philosophy, featuring class A/B amplification paired with a linear power supply using a toroidal transformer. This choice has become relatively rare today amid the widespread adoption of switched-mode power supplies. This design prioritizes current stability, reduces high-frequency noise, and—most importantly—delivers a more natural and organic sound reproduction thanks to class AB amplification. The M-Amp Solo delivers 2 x 85 watts into 8 ohms and up to 2 x 105 watts into 4 ohms, providing ample power for most hi-fi speakers, from floorstanding to bookshelf models.

Thanks to its high current capacity and high-precision power supply, the Micromega M-Amp Solo amplifier efficiently delivers up to 2 x 85 watts into 8 ohms to power any pair of bookshelf or floorstanding speakers.

A modern and evolving vision of hi-fi

The digital section is equally impressive, featuring an ESS ES9280AQ PRO DAC responsible for processing digital inputs. Micromega also offers a deliberately comprehensive range of connectors, including RCA, MM phono, optical, coaxial, and asynchronous USB inputs, not to mention a subwoofer output, a headphone output, and a pre-out.

With the Escape M1 Air module, Micromega also takes a particularly interesting approach to audio streaming. Rather than integrating all the network electronics directly into the main chassis, the brand prefers to use a removable external streamer that is compatible with Roon Ready, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and Bluetooth. This modular architecture offers several advantages. First, it helps minimize digital interference within the amplifier to preserve audio quality. It also provides greater scalability over time, since the network component can be replaced or updated independently of the amplifier itself.

Thanks to its comprehensive analog and digital inputs, the Micromega M-Amp Solo easily connects to all modern hi-fi sources, from CD players and turntables to TVs and computers. The Streamer version takes it a step further with the addition of the Escape M1 Air network module, which is compatible with Roon Ready, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and high-resolution streaming.

The return of a major player in the French hi-fi scene

With the M-Amp Solo, Micromega marks its return to the forefront of the hi-fi scene with a product that perfectly embodies its history, expertise, and modern vision of high fidelity. Priced starting at €2,899 for the Classic version, the Micromega M-Amp Solo is also available in a Streamer version for €3,090. The Plexi finish, directly inspired by the iconic 1994 model, is available for €2,999 on its own or €3,190 with the Escape M1 AIR network module. This positioning clearly illustrates Micromega’s renewed ambitions in the French premium hi-fi segment.
