British manufacturer Cambridge is expanding its Evo lineup with the new Cambridge Evo 300 streaming amplifier. Unveiled at the High End Vienna show, this new all-in-one amplifier builds on the philosophy that made the Evo 75, Evo 150, and Evo 150 SE such successes, while pushing the boundaries in terms of power, architecture, and performance. With 300 W into 8 ohms, a dual-mono design, a 32-bit DAC, and a streaming platform that’s as comprehensive as ever, the Cambridge Evo 300 stands out as the most ambitious connected model ever designed by the British brand.

A natural evolution

Launched in 2021, the Cambridge Evo line embodies evolution, transformation, and improvement. It offers a simple approach by combining all the components necessary for a modern hi-fi system into a single unit without compromising sound quality. Amplification, streaming, digital-to-analog conversion, network connectivity, and smartphone control are all integrated into a compact chassis with a particularly refined design. These are the features that made the Evo 75 and Evo 150—the first models in the lineup—such a success. More recently, the Evo 150 SE perfected the formula with optimized amplification and 2 x 150 W of power. With the Evo 300, Cambridge Audio now aims to appeal to users with large listening spaces and particularly demanding speakers, thanks to double the power—now rated at 2 x 300 W into 8 ohms.

Capable of delivering a massive 300 W into 8 ohms and 500 W into 4 ohms, the Cambridge Evo 300 amplifier can power any pair of bookshelf or floorstanding speakers, with complete control over the woofers.

Colossal power

The first figure that immediately catches the eye is undoubtedly the rated power. The Cambridge Evo 300 delivers no less than 300 watts per channel into 8 ohms and can reach up to 500 watts into 4 ohms thanks to its latest-generation Hypex NCOREx amplification. This is nearly double the power output of the current Evo 150 SE. It ensures maximum performance from any pair of speakers and perfect control over the drivers, even during the most dynamic passages.

With a fully symmetrical design and high current capacity, the Cambridge Evo 300 amplifier is sure to power even the most demanding speakers with unwavering strength.

The British brand’s engineers have also thoroughly redesigned the device’s internal architecture. The Cambridge Evo 300 now features a dual-mono architecture designed to optimize channel separation. Each channel has its own circuitry to reduce interference and improve spatial imaging. This architecture is combined with a balanced preamplifier and independent analog volume controls for each channel.

Connectors on par with a system with separate components

One of the strengths of the Evo line is its ability to replace multiple devices within a single setup. The new Evo 300 takes this concept even further. It features an HDMI eARC input for receiving audio from a TV, as well as USB, optical, and coaxial digital inputs. Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by the renowned ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M DAC. This industry-leading chip supports PCM files up to 32-bit/768 kHz as well as DSD512 streams via the USB-B port. The analog section includes two RCA inputs and one balanced XLR input. Vinyl enthusiasts also benefit from a built-in MM phono preamplifier that allows for direct connection of a turntable. An adjustable subwoofer output and a dedicated headphone output round out this exceptionally comprehensive unit.

Thanks to its numerous analog and digital inputs, the Cambridge Audio Evo 300 amplifier can be connected to a wide variety of sources, such as a TV, a turntable, or a CD player.

Many streaming options

For several years now, the StreamMagic platform has been one of the key strengths of Cambridge Audio’s electronics. The Evo 300 features the latest generation of this proprietary system. Major streaming services are, of course, supported, including Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Deezer, and Amazon Music. The device is also compatible with AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Bluetooth aptX HD, UPnP, Roon Ready, and internet radio. In addition, AirPlay 2 and Chromecast support allow you to integrate it into a multi-room system to enjoy music in every room of the house.

The Cambridge Evo amplifier can play all music streamed via AirPlay 2, DLNA, Chromecast, and Bluetooth aptX HD.

A design that’s as appealing as ever

The new Cambridge Audio Evo 300 amplifier retains the aesthetic that has largely contributed to the range’s success. The aluminum chassis still features the famous interchangeable side panels, allowing you to choose between a natural wood finish or a more contemporary black-striped trim. The main new feature is the color display, which now measures 198 mm diagonally. Larger than on previous models, it displays album covers in greater detail and showcases the elegant digital VU meters that have become iconic for the Evo series. The amplifier can be controlled remotely using its remote control or via the mobile app for iOS and Android.

The Cambridge Evo 300 amplifier comes with interchangeable side panels so you can easily customize it to match your decor or your current mood.

With the Evo 300, Cambridge Audio offers a true step up in its range for music lovers who want to enjoy the simplicity of an all-in-one system without compromising on performance. With its 300-watt-per-channel Hypex NCOREx amplification, dual-mono design, 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC, and the ever-comprehensive StreamMagic platform, the Evo 300 stands out as one of the most ambitious network amplifiers available today. It is now available for pre-order on Son-Vidéo.com for €3,999. A full review will be posted on this blog very soon.
