Watching Netflix in 4K on Chrome is finally possible!

While 4K screens are now widely available—including on laptops and PC monitors—it was surprisingly still impossible to fully enjoy Netflix using the world’s most popular browser. For years, Google Chrome limited the resolution of Netflix videos on Windows, forcing subscribers with Ultra HD-compatible plans to switch to Microsoft Edge. That restriction is now a thing of the past: Netflix has officially confirmed that Chrome 117 or later can support 4K resolution. It’s a subtle but significant change for users, who will no longer have to switch browsers just to watch a movie or TV show.

Netflix is now available in 4K on Google Chrome 117 or later on Windows. The browser has caught up with Microsoft Edge, which had long been essential for enjoying Ultra HD.

Why didn’t 4K Netflix work on Google Chrome on Windows?

The main reason for this limitation lies in DRM, or digital rights management systems. These technologies are used to prevent the direct copying of movies and TV shows streamed by streaming platforms. Chrome primarily uses Widevine, a solution developed by Google and integrated into many browsers as well as Android devices. Widevine offers several levels of security. Level L3 relies primarily on software-based protection, while Level L1 requires that certain sensitive operations be performed in a hardware-secured environment. For a long time, Netflix considered that the configuration used by Chrome did not provide a sufficient level of protection to allow its Ultra HD streams. As a result, the browser was often limited to 720p, even when the user had a 4K screen, a fast internet connection, and the appropriate Netflix subscription. However, tests conducted in 2023 showed that certain versions of Chrome could occasionally reach 1080p or even 4K HDR, although neither Google nor Netflix had yet officially confirmed this development.

Edge, for its part, had a significant advantage thanks to PlayReady, the protection system developed by Microsoft. Unlike Widevine, which is used by Chrome, PlayReady could rely on Windows’ hardware-based security mechanisms and a protected playback chain all the way to the screen. This architecture better met Netflix’s requirements for ultra high definition content. As a result, Edge has been able to stream Netflix in 4K on Windows since 2016, provided that the computer, graphics card, display, and HDMI connection are compatible. The difference between Widevine and PlayReady, therefore, is not limited to the companies that developed each technology. It primarily stems from their integration into the operating system and their ability to utilize hardware-based protection.

This change is due to the integration of Microsoft PlayReady into the Chromium playback chain on Windows. The source code published on the official Chromium repository explicitly mentions the com.microsoft.playready.recommendation.3000 system, which is used to enforce the use of hardware-based PlayReady protection. This implementation corresponds to security level SL3000, designed to keep the decryption and processing of protected content within a secure hardware environment. Chrome can therefore meet Netflix’s requirements for Ultra HD streaming, whereas its previous Widevine implementation did not consistently support 4K.

Coming soon to Mozilla Firefox?

In practical terms, Netflix officially recognizes Google Chrome as a browser capable of streaming 4K videos on Windows. The platform’s support page lists Chrome 117 or later with a maximum resolution of up to 2160p, just like Microsoft Edge. This belated arrival of 4K in Chrome illustrates, more broadly, the challenges browsers face in keeping up with developments in video streaming. Mozilla Firefox, for example, remains limited to 1080p. The open-source browser also uses Widevine to play protected content—a choice that is regularly debated within its community. The browser’s philosophy emphasizes open standards, user control, and freedom on the web, whereas DRM relies precisely on closed components designed to restrict access to and copying of content. Firefox still seems far from catching up, as Mozilla has only just added HDR support to its browser—a format that has become commonplace on most screens.

The effectiveness of these DRM systems can also be questioned, as protected movies and TV shows end up circulating on pirate sites or P2P networks anyway. In practice, these measures seem to mainly create more hassle for legitimate subscribers, who may be denied 4K access due to their browser or operating system—even though they’re paying for their subscription. This absurdity is reminiscent of the DVD era, when consumers who legally purchased a movie first had to sit through a message explaining that piracy was wrong, while an illegal copy allowed them to play the movie immediately.

Chrome is finally catching up to Microsoft Edge after a decade-long lag

With the official addition of Ultra HD support for Netflix, Google Chrome is finally catching up to Microsoft Edge after nearly a decade. Microsoft’s browser was historically the first to enable Netflix playback in 4K on Windows, but it is no longer essential for accessing the highest resolution offered by the platform. Chrome users can finally watch their movies and TV shows in 2160p directly from their usual browser, provided they meet all the hardware and software requirements. This new feature is currently limited to Windows: on macOS, Chrome is still restricted to a lower resolution, and Safari 14 or later is still required to enjoy Netflix in Ultra HD. Nevertheless, this development represents a significant step forward for PC streaming and puts an end to a restriction that had become increasingly difficult to justify in an era when 4K screens have become commonplace.
