Astell&Kern is expanding its range of compact DAPs with the PD5, a new model designed to succeed the highly acclaimed A&K SR35. Unveiled for the first time at the 2026 Hong Kong High-End AV Show, it aims to exceed expectations for a compact model with an eight-DAC conversion architecture and a record-breaking battery life of 28 hours.
Up to eight 32-bit DACs
As the successor to the highly acclaimed A&K SR35, the Astell&Kern PD5 DAP retains its compact design while pushing the boundaries—notably by doubling the number of DACs to eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs. Users can select between two operating modes depending on their needs. Quad-DAC mode uses four DACs to prioritize battery life, while Octa-DAC mode utilizes all eight DACs to get the most out of high-resolution audio files. This approach allows users to tailor the DAP’s performance depending on whether they prioritize extended on-the-go listening sessions or the best possible sound quality.
Note from the expert The inclusion of eight DACs does not mean that the DAP is capable of decoding higher-quality files than a model equipped with a single converter. The real benefit lies primarily in how these DACs work together. By distributing signal processing among multiple converters operating in parallel, it is possible to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, reduce distortion, and increase channel separation. The result is generally a cleaner, more dynamic, and more precise sound reproduction, with a better-defined soundstage. On the other hand, this architecture consumes more power, which explains the option to switch between a Quad-DAC mode—which prioritizes battery life—and an Octa-DAC mode, designed to unlock the DAP’s full sonic potential during the most demanding listening sessions.
With this architecture—unprecedented in such a compact model—Astell&Kern aims to deliver performance on par with much larger DAPs. It supports PCM files up to 32-bit/384 kHz and natively decodes DSD up to DSD256.
A record battery life of 28 hours
Another major improvement in the PD5 is its battery life. In Quad-DAC mode, the manufacturer claims up to 28 hours of continuous playback—about eight hours longer than the SR35. The DAP supports USB Power Delivery 3.0 fast charging, allowing for a full charge in about 2 hours and 30 minutes. This substantial battery capacity also explains the nickname. The manufacturer has dubbed it “All Day DAP”. However, Astell&Kern has not yet specified the battery life when all eight DACs are operating simultaneously in Octa-DAC mode.
EnviroTune automatically adjusts the sound to your environment
The Astell&Kern PD5 DAP also introduces a new technology called EnviroTune. This feature continuously analyzes ambient noise levels to automatically optimize sound reproduction. The goal is to maintain a comfortable and balanced listening experience whether in a quiet environment or on public transportation, on a busy street, or in a bustling workspace. Unlike a simple fixed equalization setting, EnviroTune adjusts the sound reproduction based on the listening conditions to improve clarity and the perception of detail.
High-resolution streaming and HD Bluetooth
The DAP runs on an Android platform powered by an octa-core processor, providing access to major music streaming services. Although the manufacturer has not yet confirmed the official list of compatible apps, we can reasonably expect to find the platforms typically offered by the brand, such as Qobuz, Tidal, Amazon Music, and Apple Music.
In terms of connectivity, the PD5 features dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3, which is compatible with major high-definition audio codecs, including aptX HD, LDAC, and LHDC. This compatibility allows you to get the most out of high-end Bluetooth headphones or earbuds without compromising too much on sound quality.
Our first impressions
On paper, the Astell&Kern PD5 seems to offer several particularly compelling features. Its eight-DAC architecture, battery life of up to 28 hours, fast charging, and new EnviroTune technology demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the listening experience from both an audiophile and practical standpoint.
However, there are still several unanswered questions before we can fully evaluate this new player, including the power of its amplifier, the user-friendliness of its software, and, above all, its final price. Astell&Kern has not yet announced the latter or a release date. However, its positioning suggests that it will be a direct successor to the SR35, which retailed for around €849 at launch. If Astell&Kern manages to keep the price close to that of the SR35, the PD5 could quickly establish itself as one of the most compelling compact DAPs in its category.
