Bose is expanding its range of open-ear earbuds with two new models: the Bose Sport and the second-generation Bose Ultra. Both models feature the company’s OpenAudio technology, which delivers sound close to the ear while allowing the user to remain aware of their surroundings. This approach is designed for both sports activities and everyday listening.
Bose made a comeback this summer in the noise-canceling headphones and earbuds segment. The company has also developed the concept further from the first-generation Bose Ultra Open, which were already based on a design that leaves the ear canal free. With this new version and a model designed specifically for sport, Bose is now applying this approach to a wider range of uses.
Bose OpenAudio: a different approach to on-the-go listening
The Bose Sport and Ultra Open (2nd generation) earbuds are based on OpenAudio technology. The transducer emits sound into the air near the ear, while the ear canal remains unblocked. This design allows you to continue hearing traffic, announcements, or conversations while listening to your music. This principle differs from bone conduction, which transmits sound through vibrations against the skull. Here, Bose combines its acoustic architecture with SoundDesign digital processing to balance clarity and bass.
Both models also feature SpeechClarity. This technology combines a dedicated microphone with a voice-capture unit to better isolate your voice during calls, especially in noisy environments.
Bose Sport: open earbuds designed for workouts
With the Bose Sport, the brand is applying this approach for the first time to a model specifically designed for physical activity. A silicone-covered C-shaped band wraps around the ear to keep the earbuds in place while running, working out, or enjoying outdoor activities.
Controls are operated via textured physical buttons, which are easier to use while exercising. The Auto Volume feature automatically adjusts the volume when the environment becomes quieter or noisier.
The IP54 rating provides protection against sweat, splashes, and dust. Battery life lasts up to seven hours per charge, and the wireless charging case adds up to 22 hours.
Bose Ultra Open 2: the original design evolves
The new Ultra Open models are direct successors to the Bose Ultra Open, which were already part of the Bose lineup when it returned to Son-Vidéo.com this summer. The basic design remains the same, featuring a cuff-like shape that fits around the outer ear and keeps the ear canal clear.
This second-generation model, however, features a new transducer that is designed to deliver deeper bass and higher volume. Battery life has also improved, lasting up to nine hours, with an additional 19.5 hours provided by the wireless charging compatible case.
Bose also adds a Cinema mode based on its TrueSpatial technology. This mode widens the soundstage for videos and podcasts while keeping dialogue centered. Snapdragon Sound and aptX Adaptive round out connectivity with compatible Android devices.
Bluetooth 5.4 and connected features
Both models use Bluetooth 5.4 with multipoint connectivity for two devices, SBC and AAC codecs, and Google Fast Pair. The Bose app lets you adjust the three-band equalizer, Auto Volume, and various shortcuts.
An update scheduled for after the October 1 launch will also add Google Find Hub, Alexa+, and Apple Music shortcuts. These additions round out the Bose earbuds range, which now includes both active noise cancelling models and fully open-ear solutions.
