Our expert’s opinion

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi headphones won me over with their radically different wireless approach. The WiFi network player, the Himalaya R2R DAC, and the built-in amplifier combine within the headphones to create a true personal hi-fi system. They deliver an immense soundstage, excellent instrument separation, and a highly detailed reproduction that remains remarkably smooth. WiFi is the real game-changer here: once the headphones are set up, the music delivers remarkable audiophile-grade quality thanks to the built-in electronics.
The open-back design, suspended headband, and generously sized ear pads make them ideal for long listening sessions, though users should be mindful of the ear cups’ very elongated shape, which may press against the jawbones depending on the wearer’s facial structure. As with Bluetooth in its early days, however, the Wi-Fi connectivity of these headphones means the user experience is still imperfect. Overall, though, the HE1000 Wi-Fi stands out as a particularly comprehensive solution for enjoying top-tier planar sound reproduction with the freedom of Wi-Fi streaming.

The new HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi headphones combine high-end planar transducers, a wireless WiFi connection, a Himalaya R2R DAC, and dedicated amplification. This innovative design promises extremely precise audiophile-grade sound reproduction, accessible via Qobuz, Spotify, or Roon. After several weeks of listening sessions, do the HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi manage to maintain their hi-fi DNA when used wirelessly?

Introducing the HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi hi-fi headphones feature the same architecture as the HiFiMAN HE1000 Unveiled with their large open-back ear cups, planar transducers featuring Stealth Magnet technology, and suspended headband. This model combines the aesthetic of the HE1000 series with a range of electronic features specifically designed for streaming: a built-in Wi-Fi network player, a Bluetooth aptX HD/LDAC receiver, a Himalaya R2R DAC, dedicated amplification, and a battery. This design integrates the entire audio chain within the ear cups and places high-resolution wireless streaming at the heart of the listening experience. The Sonos Ace paved the way for the arrival of Wi-Fi in the world of wireless headphones. HiFiMAN is developing this technology with a decidedly audiophile focus through its new HE1000 Wi-Fi and Arya WiFi.

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi open-back hi-fi headphones feature the large, asymmetrical oval ear cups of the HE1000 series. Their design accommodates the planar transducers and the electronics dedicated to WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB audio modes.

Alongside the Arya WiFi, the HE1000 WiFi are one of the first pairs of open-back hi-fi headphones with planar transducers designed for network streaming. Once set up, they appear as a playback device in Qobuz, Spotify, and Roon, just like a wireless speaker. Devices connected to the same network can then play music through them.

The design of these headphones is tailored to their fully active architecture. The ear cups house the Wi-Fi module, Bluetooth 5.1, the Himalaya R2R DAC, the class AB amplification module, and the battery. A fixed grille protects the transducers while allowing ample airflow around the diaphragms. Like all open-back headphones, the HE1000 WiFi are primarily intended for home listening: they offer little sound isolation, and music can be heard by those around you. A quiet living room, office, or dedicated listening room are therefore ideal.

The HiFiMan HE1000 WiFi stands out with its champagne and dark brown finish. The adjustable aluminium headband provides structural support, while the wide synthetic leather headband distributes the 452 g across the top of the head. The synthetic leather and fabric ear pads combine support and comfort during long listening sessions.

WiFi at the heart of the experience

Wi-Fi is the standout feature of these HiFiMAN HE1000 Wi-Fi open-back hi-fi headphones. Once configured on your home network, the headphones appear as a playback source in Qobuz, Spotify, and Roon. Your smartphone, tablet, or computer controls the music, while the HE1000 WiFi receive the audio stream directly. Wi-Fi transmission, rated at up to 633 Mb/s, supports the playback of lossless and high-resolution tracks. Your home network’s coverage determines the range, allowing you to listen seamlessly from one room to another.

Streaming service → Wi-Fi network → network player → Himalaya R2R DAC → class AB amplification → planar transducers

This integrated system eliminates the need for a traditional setup (headphones, DAC, and headphone amplifier). HiFiMAN controls every stage of the signal and directly tailors the electronics to the requirements of the planar drivers.

An exceptional acoustic design

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi use planar magnetic transducers with a nanometre-grade diaphragm. This ultra-thin diaphragm responds quickly to signal variations and ensures precise reproduction of attack, decay, and subtle details. The magnetic force acts over a large surface area of the diaphragm, ensuring uniform movement and very low distortion.

The ear cups of the HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi open-back hi-fi headphones combine a perforated plate with a central honeycomb grille. This design protects the transducers while enhancing the open-back acoustic design of these planar magnetic headphones.

The Stealth Magnet structure is engineered to reduce turbulence and reflections around the transducers. Sound waves travel more freely, contributing to the transparency and precision of the stereo image. The open design enhances the sense of space and the placement of vocals, instruments, and sound effects.

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi open-back hi-fi headphones feature hybrid ear pads, with breathable fabric on the outer rim and synthetic leather on the sides. Their deep, oval shape fully envelops the ears and perfectly distributes the pressure of each ear cup.

The Himalaya R2R DAC handles the digital-to-analogue conversion, and the class AB amplifier then directly powers the planar transducers. These integrated electronics provide the essential components of a hi-fi system right inside the ear cups. The HE1000 WiFi headphones also feature Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity with SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, and LDAC codecs, as well as a USB-C audio connection that supports PCM streams up to 768 kHz and DSD512. Their Roon Ready certification allows for direct integration into a Roon environment. The advertised battery life is up to 7 hours over Wi-Fi and up to 23 hours over Bluetooth, depending on the codec used.

What accessories are included?

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi come in a premium case, along with a USB-A to USB-C cable and a printed manual. The latter provides details on how to set up the network, use the controls, reset the headphones, update them, and pair them via Bluetooth, while also providing links to instructional videos. This essential information helps users get started with the network features.

Connectors and controls

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi headphones offer three listening modes: Wi-Fi for high-resolution streaming, Bluetooth 5.1, and USB-C for wired audio playback and charging. The USB-C port supports PCM streams up to 768 kHz and DSD512 files.

The physical controls on the left ear cup include power, volume, and source selection. Pressing the function button cycles through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and USB audio modes; the pink LED indicates USB mode. Pressing the power button twice quickly activates Bluetooth pairing, indicated by the LED flashing blue and green. The indicator LED also show the headphones’ charge status.

Setup and first impressions

The initial setup involves connecting the HE1000 WiFi to your home network so that the headphones can be accessed from compatible apps. The included manual guides you through this process with step-by-step instructions for WiFi setup, controls, Bluetooth pairing, resetting, and updates. Informative videos accompany this documentation. After turning on the headphones, it takes about two minutes for the Wi-Fi to activate and for the headphones to appear on the network. Qobuz sometimes detects the HE1000 WiFi after an additional delay, while Spotify is generally more responsive. Once the connection is established, the headphones function just like any other Wi-Fi device connected to the same network.

We were unable to connect to the HiFiMAN app during this test. The app’s interface wasn’t very intuitive and it took several attempts to figure out the different setup steps. Hopefully, a future update will make it easier to use.

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi headphones are now Roon Ready certified. This means they can be added directly to the playback zones of a Roon environment and receive HD audio streams from the software. This compatibility enhances their WiFi functionality for listeners who stream digital music over a local network.

Test conditions

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi headphones were tested with a PC, a Mac, and an Android smartphone. Music playback was provided by Spotify and Qobuz using all three connection modes supported by the headphones: WiFi, Bluetooth, and USB-C. Multimedia and gaming performance were evaluated on a PC. These tests were conducted via Bluetooth and USB-C. The wired connection ensures immediate audio and video synchronisation.

Wi-Fi was not evaluated for multimedia content or gaming. When listening to music, however, this connection proved to be more responsive than Bluetooth in managing playback and source changes. Its potential for video games and movies therefore warrants a dedicated test. To stabilise the diaphragms and fully appreciate the headphones’ final sound quality, these listening tests were conducted after a break-in period of approximately 150 hours.

My impressions

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi immediately impressed me with the quality of its packaging. The hard transport case, the champagne and dark brown finish, the choice of materials, and the precise assembly do the HE1000 series justice. The printed manual rounds out the package with detailed explanations for understanding the network features and physical controls.

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi open-back hi-fi headphones come in a hard case with fabric padding between the various components. HiFiMAN has opted for a premium presentation here, rather than the foam inserts that are a hallmark of the brand’s packaging.

Soundwise, the HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi immediately impressed me with the stability of its stereo image. The soundstage was broad while delivering credible depth and allowed me to precisely locate the position of the performers. The various layers remained distinct in dense arrangements: vocals, orchestral sections, bass lines, and percussion elements were all perfectly positioned and remarkably clear. This ability to separate sounds gave live recordings and soundtracks a particularly compelling immersive quality.

The planar transducers provided excellent transient response and very subtle microdynamics. String attacks, note decays, breaths and variations in reverb were reproduced very naturally. The bass emphasised texture and articulation, with a generous foundation that supported the musical message. The midrange offered a rich variety of tones and highlighted the vocals, whilst the high frequencies extended the soundstage with finesse, definition and airiness.

This sound reproduction prioritised overall coherence over a spectacular performance. The HE1000 WiFi headphones remained perfectly smooth across the entire spectrum, with a balance that made them ideal for long listening sessions. The sound was highly detailed while delivering a versatile, musical, and easy-on-the-ears experience.

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi open-back hi-fi headphones fully envelop the ears thanks to their large asymmetrical oval ear cups. They conform to the shape of the face and distribute pressure evenly around the ears.

The suspended headband effectively distributes the headphones’ 452 g and reduces pressure on the head and around the ears. The very elongated ear cups extend down to the jawline.

Wi-Fi is what makes these HiFiMAN 2026 headphones truly unique. It allows you to do away with cables and external electronics without sacrificing the experience of listening to a true audiophile system. The built-in network player streams music directly from Qobuz, Spotify, or Roon once connected to your home network. The network player, the Himalaya R2R DAC, the amplifier, and the planar transducers are combined in a single device, with listening freedom wherever the Wi-Fi network reaches. The HE1000 WiFi headphones are a personal hi-fi system, available anywhere in the home where the network allows.

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi open-back hi-fi headphones feature a USB-C port, a function button, and volume controls all on a single ear cup. Colored LEDs indicate the active mode and charge status.

The controls grouped on the right ear cup can take some getting used to. On the pair of headphones we tested, pressing the function button cycled through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and USB audio modes, while the coloured LEDs indicated the active source. This system requires you to memorise the correspondence between the colours and the modes. The lack of any annotation on these buttons doesn’t make them any easier to use on a daily basis.

Who are the HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi headphones designed for?

The HE1000 WiFi headphones are priced at €2,959 and are designed for music lovers seeking the sound quality of planar magnetic technology and the playback flexibility offered by a Wi-Fi network. These headphones are a full-fledged hi-fi system you can wear, accessible from various sources connected to your home network. The detailed sound reproduction, very wide soundstage, and open-back design will appeal to fans of classical music, jazz, live concerts, and movie soundtracks.

The HiFiMAN HE1000 WiFi open-back hi-fi headphones are a natural fit for a home listening setup. Their open-back design delivers a spacious sound in a quiet environment. Public transportation, shared offices, and noisy environments call for closed-back headphones with sound isolation.

The HE1000 WiFi excels as an all-in-one hi-fi system for home listening. Its sound quality and the freedom offered by Wi-Fi set it apart. However, its ergonomics, app, and network setup fall short of the high standards set by the headphones themselves.
