Sound & Vision Top Pick 2022: discover all the winners


Following the What Hi-Fi: Product of the Year Awards and the AVForums Editor’s Choice Awards, Sound & Vision presents its Top Pick 2022 selection. The website of the American magazine Sound & Vision offers hundreds of reviews of audiovisual equipment, classified by category and covering the fields of home theater and hi-fi.

The Top Pick label recognizes the best equipment of the year in the following categories: televisions, projectors, projection screens, home theater amplifiers, hi-fi amplifiers, AV sources, soundbars, speakers, wireless speakers, subwoofers, headphones and True Wireless earbuds. Here are the winners for 2022.

Already awarded an AVForums Editor’s Choice Award, the OLED TVs in the LG G2 range are “the ultimate expression of LG’s progress” according to Sound & Vision, and win the Top Pick label for their faithful HDR rendering, Dolby Vision compatibility, and the great color accuracy they offer.

The Samsung QE55S95B OLED TV, meanwhile, received the magazine’s Overall Top Pick of the Year award. Sound & Vision says, “The Samsung S95B is the Top Pick of the Year because it produced the best picture we have seen come out of a consumer flat panel display.”

The Samsung OLED TV S95B is an ultra-slim model equipped with the manufacturer’s latest technologies for optimal image quality with movies, series and video games.

Regarding projection, the Sony VPL-XW5000 projector was praised by the magazine. This native 4K laser model delivers exceptional image quality with its 4K UHD SXRD chip, new high-performance optics and X1 Ultimate processor. Sound & Vision concludes, “There’s nothing like it in this price range.”

In the field of ultra-short throw projectors, the Epson EH-LS800 won the Top Pick 2022 award. According to Sound & Vision, this laser model with Android TV and Chromecast built-in “goes beyond what most other UST projectors can offer when making itself at home in a living room setting.”

With its powerful laser lamp, the Epson EH-LS800 ultra short throw 4K projector projects a vivid, dynamic, high-contrast image, even during the day in a dimly lit room.

For Sound & Vision, the best AV receiver of the year was the Marantz Cinema 50. This 9.4 channel ultra extensive model is IMAX Enhanced, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Auro-3D compatible. “You might conclude that the Marantz C50 is a strong choice for a thoroughly modern home-theater control center. And given the C50’s fine audio and video results, broad features list, and generally solid ergonomics, you’d be correct.”

In the hi-fi sector, the NAD C399 amp was awarded the Sound & Vision Top Pick label. This powerful model with Hypex HybridDigital nCore digital amplification will be perfect for “those interested in sound quality, features, the flexibility of a modular design, and, importantly, value”.

The source that received a Top Pick 2022 award was the Apple TV 4K network player, praised for its performance, features and overall value. Sound & Vision even points out that “the latest Apple TV 4K emerges as the gold standard.”

In addition to its TVs, Samsung was praised for its Samsung HW-Q990B soundbar. Consisting of a soundbar, subwoofer and a pair of Atmos surround speakers, this 11.1.4-channel wireless system “delivers home theater-worthy sound that is truly enveloping at a level most soundbars cannot achieve.”

With its wireless subwoofer and surround speakers and Q-Symphony technology, the Samsung HW-Q990B soundbar puts the listener in a sound bubble.

As far as speakers are concerned, Sound & Vision was impressed by the Silver 7G series from British manufacturer Monitor Audio. The latter has completely revised this seventh generation of Monitor Audio Silver speakers, both in terms of acoustics and design. The Monitor Audio Silver 7G range is equipped with C-CAM tweeters as well as woofers and midrange drivers using an RST II cone. According to the magazine, “these speakers look and sound great, whether used for a dedicated home theater or a living room-friendly AV system.”

Already the recipient of numerous awards, the B&W PX8 Bluetooth headphones also caught the attention of Sound & Vision. These luxuriously designed active noise cancelling headphones won the Top Pick 2022 award for their appearance, comfort and transparent mode. “With the Bowers and Wilkins Px8, you get luxurious ANC headphones with exactly the sound quality you would expect.”

According to Sound & Vision, these wireless earbuds “deliver a user experience that speaks to how and why Apple is so dominant in this category.”
