The demonstration of the Aura 3 Max at IFA showcased the new X-Vision Bionic optical engine, amongst other features. This engine combines a 0.47 inch DLP DMD chip with a triple RGB laser light source covering up to 110% of the BT.2020 color space. The Aura 3 Max delivers 5,700 ISO lumens, compared to 2,300 ISO lumens for its predecessor, the Aura 2.
The major improvement is in contrast. This new projector features two mechanical irises that work together to physically control the light output. Xgimi claims a native contrast ratio of 8,000:1 for the Aura 3 Max. A dynamic, frame-by-frame adjustment also adapts the iris aperture to the brightness of each scene, while the Dynamic Black Enhancement feature optimizes the rendering of dark areas.
Xgimi also notes that it has worked to reduce stray light at various points along the optical path, particularly through treatments applied to the components. The optical system itself consists of 19 elements, designed to maintain consistent sharpness all the way to the corners of the image.
120Hz 4K in an ultra-short-throw projector
Another standout feature: the Aura 3 supports 4K signals at 120 frames per second, via its HDMI 2.1 port only, and can project them in true 120 Hz 4K, rather than just 60 Hz 4K or 120 Hz 1080p, as was the case until now. Consequently, Xgimi presents the Aura 3 Max as the first UST projector capable of this feat. The processing is based on an architecture featuring two DLPC 8545 controllers, which are responsible for processing image data in parallel and moving the micro-mirrors in the matrix at ultra-high frequencies.
This feature is of direct interest to gamers seeking smooth performance across a very large screen diagonal. The projector also supports Dolby Vision Gaming, VRR, and ALLM, with a claimed minimum response time of 1 ms. MEMC processing also works in 120 Hz 4K to smooth out motion, a feature well-suited for sports broadcasts and content with a lot of fast movement.
For movies, HDR compatibility includes Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and HLG formats, with dynamic tone mapping and native playback at 24 frames per second. The X-Vision AI processor works in real time to reconstruct details and process HDR content. ISF certification and Filmmaker Mode round out this TV’s features.
A 100-inch picture just 5 inches from the wall
The Aura 3 retains one of the main advantages of an ultra-short-throw projector. Its 0.163:1 throw ratio allows for a 100-inch image from just 5 inches (12.8 cm) away from the wall. For a 120-inch screen, Xgimi specifies a distance of 8 inches (20.3 cm), which significantly reduces the the floor space required and makes it easy to place the projector on most standard TV stands.
The system makes extensive use of automation: features include alignment with the screen, keystone correction, focusing, adjustment for wall color and flatness, and eye protection. A movable cover also protects the lens when the projector is not in use.
The manufacturer rounds out the package with an 80-watt Harman Kardon audio system that supports Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X. The Google TV interface provides access to major streaming platforms, as well as Google Cast, Google Home, and Gemini. Connectors include three HDMI 2.1 inputs, two USB ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and optical and analog digital audio outputs.
