Sony announced two major firmware updates for the Sony VPL-VW760ES and Sony VPL-VW5000ES UHD 4K projectors at the 2019 Berlin IFA show. On the agenda are significant improvements in the image quality, functionality and stability of the projectors.
Digital Focus Optimiser (DFO)
The first improvement provided by the update for the Sony VPL-VW760ES and VPL-VW5000ES is a new function called Digital Focus Optimizer (DFO). It is important to note that any projector can produce a blurred effect in the four corners of the image, even if a high-quality lens is used. The new Digital Focus Optimizer (DFO) tool digitally compensates for this effect to optimize the focus and sharpness of images in the edges of the projected scene. Once the projector has been updated, the DFO feature can be activated and deactivated at any time in the Reality Creation menu.
Dual Contrast Control Engine
The Sony VPL-VW760ES and Sony VPL-VW5000ES projectors use a laser light source capable of providing significantly higher contrast and vibrancy than classic lamps. The contrast is now even more impressive thanks to a dynamic iris control. As a result, both Sony projectors are more efficient at displaying a maximum of detail in the dark and bright areas of the image. The improvement in HDR scenes is indisputable.
Separate SDR and HDR management
Up until now, the different values used for the brightness, color, hue, and other settings were used for both HDR and SDR content. The image wasn’t always ideally optimized for the type of program being viewed. The new update for the Sony VPL-VW760ES and Sony VPL-VW5000ES projectors allows the user to save separate settings for programs in SDR and HDR. The projector then uses the appropriate settings depending on the content being viewed.
The firmware update for the Sony VPL-VW760ES and Sony VPL-VW5000ES projectors allows you to enjoy deeper and more realistic blacks thanks to tone smoothing in dark areas of the image. Consequently, the contrast is improved, especially with HDR content.
Improved HDR selection
The HDR10 and HDR Reference modes are now available in the Sony VPL-VW760ES and Sony VPL-VW5000ES projectors’ HDR Auto menu. This way, when “HDR Reference” is selected in the HDR Auto menu, it’s the mode that is automatically chosen when HDR content is detected.
The HDR content displayed by the Sony VPL-VW5000ES projector is also enhanced thanks to an HDR Reference curve that optimizes the image quality of HDR 4K content up to 1000 nits. As a result, the color transition in the bright areas of the image is greatly enriched and the image is closer to the intention of the director.
Correction of the synchronisation problem
This firmware update also improves the stability and speed of the Sony VPL-VW5000ES projector. Up until now, the latter sometimes took more than 30 seconds to switch between content with different frame rates or between SDR and HDR programs. With the new firmware, this problem has been solved. The standard switching time will also be improved by reducing the time required by about two seconds, thus going from 11 to 9 seconds.
The update for the Sony VPL-VW760ES projector is now available on Sony’s website or directly on the projector itself. However, you will have to wait until early November to update the Sony VPL-VW5000ES.
