SVOD platform Netflix is quietly entering the gaming market. Included in all subscriptions, 86 mobile games are already available, including classics such as the remastered Grand Theft Auto trilogy and the two excellent episodes of Oxenfree developed by the talented Night School Studio.

In Oxenfree, available on Netflix, you play as Alex who meets his friends on an island for a party. But something unexpected happens and the group of friends opens up a ghostly rift.

Netflix wants to develop its gaming catalog

Since 2021, Netflix has been testing the waters with a relatively discreet, but high-quality catalog. The platform has a few great exclusive titles, such as the two installments of Oxenfree, the first of which is now available on GOG and Steam. The arrival of the prestigious Grand Theft Auto license shows that the American giant wants to attract more gamers.

Currently, there are 86 available games with Netflix subscriptions. This offer is soon going to grow, with the arrival of titles like Cozy Grove: Camp Spirit, FashionVerse, Death’s Door, Katana Zero, The Rise of the Golden Idol, Braid Anniversary Edition and Game Dev Tycoon. In total, 90 new games are going to be added to the platform in the coming months.

Hades and Sonic Mania Plus on Netflix

Among the long list of announced games, Hades is the one attracting the most attention. Released in 2020, this roguelite from Supergiant Games was a huge success when it went into early access. You play as Zagreus, trying to escape from his father Hades, King of the Greek underworld. What’s special about this game is that it will only be available on iOS. To date, there is no Android version. A major new license that adds a little more prestige to the Netflix catalog.

Sonic Mania Plus, another big video game hit, will be joining the line-up in early 2024. Excellent news for fans of the hedgehog, especially as this opus is one of the most popular of recent years. Netflix seems to want to put a little more emphasis on gaming, and we’re not mad about it.

Exclusive games developed for Netflix

In this batch of announcements, we also learned that a video game based on Zack Snyder’s film Rebel Moon is also in the works at Super Evil Megacorp. An interesting license that has the potential to become the “Star Wars of Netflix”. However, the tone is more serious and mature. The universe is rich enough to be translated into a video game.

Lastly, Squid Game is also going to get a video game adaptation. If we are to believe Mike Verdu, head of Netflix’s games division, the title will indeed be set in “the Squid Game universe” and could allow you to “compete with other players”. We imagine that this is the first attempt at a multiplayer game.

While all eyes are on Xbox when cloud gaming is mentioned, Netflix will probably make a name for itself in the years to come. With a market that could reach 8.17 billion dollars in 2025, according to Newzoo, it isn’t surprising that new players are arriving in this burgeoning sector.

How to play video games on Netflix

Accessing the games catalog on Netflix couldn’t be easier. From an iOS or Android smartphone, scroll down and a “Games” category appears. Simply select the title you wish to download. Netflix then redirects you to the App Store or Play Store, and the game downloads just like a regular app.

It is also possible to access these games directly from the App Store and Play Store. To do this, go to the Netflix app page, then to the “Netflix, Inc” developer profile. From there, all available games are listed, and you can download them straight away.

Note: you need to be logged into the Netflix app and have a subscription in order to enjoy the games.
