Presented earlier this year at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, the new FiiO M33 is the brand’s first DAP to feature a fully passive R2R DAC. It promises the most impressive analog sound experience ever integrated into a player at this price level.

A high-end-inspired R2R DAC

R2R digital conversion technology is playing an increasingly central role in the Asian manufacturer’s strategy, and has been used extensively in recent products. From the FiiO K11 R2R and FiiO K13 R2R DACs to the FiiO DM15 R2R CD player, this architecture has established itself as a true sonic signature. With the new FiiO M33, this approach takes a new step forward, inviting itself for the first time into the heart of a digital audio player.

It features a fully passive 24-bit R2R DAC, based on a network of 96 meticulously matched resistors. Unlike delta-sigma converters, which dominate the world of portable audio players, R2R conversion favors intrinsic signal linearity and coherence. The result is a more organic, analog-like reproduction, characterized by great fluidity, natural harmonic richness and the absence of any harshness or artificial digital coloration.

Equipped with a network of precisely matched resistors, the R2R DAC in the FiiO M33 DAP favors natural signal linearity and a smooth, rich, organic reproduction, avoiding any digital artifacts.
Note from the expert
R2R (Resistor-to-Resistor) conversion is one of the very first digital-to-analog conversion architectures, widely used from the 1980s onwards in professional equipment and the first digital players. Its principle is based on a network of weighted resistors, generally organized on a binary scale, with each bit of the digital signal corresponding to a precise combination of resistors. Unlike modern delta-sigma DACs, which rely on massive oversampling and noise modulation followed by complex filtering, the R2R performs direct, instantaneous conversion of every bit of digital information. This approach limits intermediate digital processing and preserves the signal's temporal structure.

Power in your pocket

The R2R conversion of the FiiO M33 DAP is combined with an equally ambitious amplification stage, with a fully symmetrical architecture with eight operational amplifiers. The latter are carefully isolated from the digital circuits to preserve signal integrity. As a result, the FiiO M33 is able to deliver a highly accurate 1100mW per channel on its balanced 4.4mm output, and 470mW on the unbalanced 3.5mm output. These values allow the use of demanding headphones, including those with high impedance or low sensitivity. It also offers a line output, as well as a coaxial output and a bi-directional USB-C port for integration into a home system, with a desktop mode now customary on the brand’s portable players. As a reminder, this mode boosts performance when the device is powered from the mains and preserves battery life. For portable use, the battery promises up to 14 hours of listening via the 3.5mm output and around 12h30 in balanced mode.

Combined with the R2R DAC, the FiiO M33’s amplification delivers a high current reserve to drive the most demanding headphones. In desktop mode, mains power optimizes performance while preserving battery life, transforming the player into a true dedicated headphones amplifier.

Android with streaming

The display is provided by a 5.5-inch HD screen, large enough to navigate easily through your playlists, online music services or system settings. The responsiveness of the Android interface provides the FiiO M33 R2R with ergonomics that will be familiar to those accustomed to Android smartphones, while remaining dedicated to audio. Access to the Google Play Store enables the installation of the majority of mobile apps, including those from streaming services such as Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and Deezer. It is also possible to play files shared over the home network or stored locally, either in the player’s internal memory or on a micro SD card. Finally, there are numerous customization options, including a 10-band parametric equalizer, an All-to-DSD mode, as well as several filters and oversampling processes.

Like all the brand’s portable players, the FiiO M33 runs on Android for intuitive navigation and direct access to the majority of streaming services.

With the new FiiO M33 R2R DAP, the Asian manufacturer continues to make R2R conversion more accessible. After successful experiments with its DACs and players, the brand is now taking a decisive step forward by integrating this architecture into a comprehensive, powerful and versatile Android portable player. Now available to pre-order on Son-Vidéo.com at a price of €649, it promises to be one of the most interesting players in its category for those seeking a more organic, smooth and natural sound reproduction, while enjoying the comfort of streaming and an open ecosystem.
