In 2020, Denon and Marantz proudly announced the release of their HDMI 2.1-compatible A/V receivers to support 4K/120 Hz and 8K/60 Hz streams from Next Gen Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles. However, a major problem soon became apparent, with the inability to deliver 4K streams at 120Hz with these latest generation consoles. The cause was the incompatibility of the Panasonic chip installed in all these HDMI 2.1 receivers from Denon and Marantz.
As promised, Sound United, the parent company of Denon and Marantz, has announced a permanent solution to the incompatibility issue with the high frame rate signals of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X gaming consoles. However, since this incompatibility is caused by a hardware glitch, it cannot be fixed by a simple update. Sound United therefore enables users to get around the problem of this chip by providing an external HDMI box intended to be inserted between the game console and the Denon or Marantz amplification.
The SPK618 HDMI adapter is designed to solve the compatibility problem between the latest generation of game consoles and Denon and Marantz A/V receivers equipped with an HDMI 2.1 input. To do this, the adapter has an HDMI input that fully supports 4K UHD streams up to 120Hz, as well as 8K at 60Hz. The HDMI output of this box connects to the 8K compatible HDMI input of Denon and Marantz receivers. To take full advantage of 8K and 4K 120Hz videos, the manufacturer recommends updating your A/V receiver’s firmware and using HDMI cables that are either Ultra High Speed certified or provide very high data rates. This is the case, for example, of cables from the Audioquest HDMI 48 Gbps range. If you use another HDMI cable, the video may not be displayed or other problems may occur.
If you own one of the Denon or Marantz A/V receivers listed below and are affected by this incompatibility with the Xbox Series X and the PS5, you can register on the Denon or Marantz website to receive the SPK618 HDMI adapter for free. To do so, simply enter your contact information, the receiver in question, as well as its serial number and place of purchase.
