DTS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Xperi Holding Corporation, announces its intention to make DTS Play-Fi wireless surround sound accessible to everyone. Compatible with regular Wi-Fi standards, Play-Fi home theater equips televisions with wireless surround sound. TVs with DTS Play-Fi home theater will hit the market in the third quarter of 2021. They will be compatible with any existing ecosystem including soundbars, smart speakers and Play-Fi amplifiers.

The Philips The One TAB8505 2.1-channel soundbar is DTS Play-Fi compatible. This means that it will soon be possible to use it wirelessly with any TV equipped with DTS Play-Fi home theater technology.

DTS Play-Fi’s latest innovation solves some of the problems associated with the poor sound quality seen on increasingly slimline TVs, or the limited appeal of surround sound in a home environment due to the aesthetic challenges posed by wired speakers and HDMI cables. Play-Fi home theater offers a number of wireless configurations to enhance the audio performance of a TV and bring “connected” surround sound to any room.

Users of televisions with a Play-Fi home theater system will be able to:

  • Use the TV’s built-in drivers as part of the wireless surround system, or upgrade them with a Play-Fi compatible soundbar or front speakers to improve the wireless audio quality between the TV and the drivers;
  • Add Play-Fi compatible speakers as wireless surround speakers for more intense sound immersion;
  • Add up to two Play-Fi compatible wireless subwoofers to bring deep bass to their TV;
  • Use Play-Fi’s additional features such as multi-room grouping of the TV with Play-Fi enabled speakers for music and TV sound, and headphone playback via an app.

DTS Play-Fi automatically adjusts to the number of wireless speakers connected to the TV, giving users a modular solution to meet the requirements of their room or upgrade their system over time if additional equipment is purchased.

“We are excited to bring the latest DTS Play-Fi home theater technology to market,” said Dannie Lau, general manager of DTS Play-Fi. “Users no longer need to sacrifice aesthetics to enjoy an enhanced audio experience. They can get better sound quality by simply using a discreetly placed wireless subwoofer, or by building a high-performance home theater with a full range of wireless speakers and subwoofers.”

The DTS Play-Fi ecosystem features a range of wireless home audio hardware, with compatible speakers, TVs, soundbars and A/V receivers from more than 30 leading brands. Users therefore have many possibilities to find the right product for their individual needs in wireless audio.
